The story line is excellent. The Graphics are breathtaking. The attention to detail makes you wonder if the makers of this game have girlfriends!, or a life for that matter!

This game is unbelievable. You have so many different levels, so many different angles and so many different storylines to explore.

The main storyline is twisting and brilliantly written & performed. As you make your way through the game, you get the option to make yourself into a servant of the light side or an underling of the dark side. With a truly unique combat and advancement system (based on the d20 Star Wars system- always a treat), this game will have you playing for weeks to beat it, that is, if you skip all the side storylines. And after you're done beating it as a light jedi or a dark jedi- you'll be raring to beat it as the opposite side.

The sequel is coming out in a year or so, and if you think that I'm patient about its release, you're nuts, because this game is incredible, and if its sequel is half as good as the original it will be worth double and asked price.

This game is one of the greatest I've ever played, but buyer beware: this is an RPG, not a shooter or "action" game, although the game itself has plenty of action.

The game revolves around a character you create at the game's onset, whose past gets filled in as the story progresses and whose decisions influence the future of the galaxy. You eventually can pick up another nine characters, including Jedi, a Wookiee and droids, one of which is one of the most amusing characters I've ever seen. As the story takes place thousands of years before the events of the films, you don't need to be a Star Wars junkie to dive right in.

The game features lots of ways to customize your character's abilities, and more than enough sidequests to keep people interested. Many of these quests influence your alignment - the more you lean toward the Light Side, the more comfortable people will feel around you (and thus, I found, they will give you more quests as the game goes on). The Dark Side is pretty profitable, though, to make up for that.

The biggest thing that one has to get used to is the combat mechanic. It is very D&D-style, using a simulated 20-sided die roll to resolve actions (for example, a base target of 10 + 5 (for opponent's defense) - 3 (your attack bonus) = 12 (modified to-hit target). Thankfully, this mechanic runs in the background and is quickly ignored. When you sight an enemy, you can choose to engage them, choosing a series of actions to take (e.g. normal attack, special attack, throw grenade, normal attack) that you can modify on the fly. Hardcore shooter fans will hate it, but most people will adapt to it fairly quickly. Plus, the later stages of the game are frenetic enough that most people will appreciate KOTOR's approach to combat.

The game also has significant replay value - besides the obvious filling out your quest and item logs, your choices influence the ending. So if you played the first time as a goody-two-shoes, you can run through it again as a horseman of apocalypse and see what happens this time.

This game requires a serious investment of time - you're looking at least 25 hours, and that's only if you're amazingly good, uncannily lucky and do none of the sidequests.

A few minor complaints I have about the game: first off, the only time you can change a character's equipment is when they are in your active party. This is particularly frustrating when you are in your base with all nine standing around you, but becuase you haven't selected them, you physically have to leave the base with two at a time to change equipment (good luck if your pulling a 4-character switch like I did :( ). Second, some of the videos a dialogue animations are buggy. Third, there is a convenient "Return to base" option; the problem is, it is not always active. This is fine for, say, a boss stage you can't escape until you defeat said boss, but in some cases it makes no sense (i.e. I can walk back through one doorway and it will work on the other side).

Minor complaints aside, KOTOR rightly deserves those Game of the Year awards it won. If you like (or can at least tolerate) a true RPG, pick this up.

Needless to say that this game proves that there are good rpgs out there. The story is long in my mind (about 10-13 hours if you know where to go.) Because of its storyline replay value may be cut short. But regardless is a fantastic game.

Darth Malak is the head of an seemingly invincible sith fleet and is on a conquest to exterminate the jedi from existance. As a soldier, scout, or scoundrel it is up to you as your story unfolds and it is up to you to either save the galaxy or conquer it. What will you choose?

Overall a great game with a long storyline.

This game will amaze you in more than one dimension. Beautiful background, fast-paced action, player interraction, character and story development, and various missions requiring different feats and skills to overcome (solving a math puzzle or a murder case in addition to your main missions) make this game one to play for ages.
I have not yet to play any other games the past two months. A must buy!

This game is awesome. It is so open and you have to keep playing to see what comes next. The weapons and armor and items are awesome. You can choose tons of party members like wookies and even jedi's. I've never seen a star wars movie and don't get star wars at all, but this game is sweet. I'm gonna watch the movies. I have been playing the game for about 5 hours and i haven't beat the first world thing. It is a very long game and i can tell it will be very playable after a beat it once. I am on a quest to get off the first world, so im almost done with the first world.

People are complaining about the turn-based battling, but its not a problem at all. I actually like it a lot, but for people that dont think it sounds good, listen to this. You can set attacks ahead of time so you can fight them without having to chose your attack later, and there are lots of other things. It's not like Final Fantasy where you go into a battle sequence and your just stuck there battling people and chosing attacks after attacks until you kill them. You can run around, chose new attacks at any time, and switch to other people in your party, so you aren't confined to certain places or people. You can barely call it turn-based. You can also switch between targeted enemies at any time and you dont have to attack one enemy at a time.

The only flaws are how much loading the game has in it, and it has kind of a lot of glitches and sometimes freezes for a few seconds, but it is an rpg, which means it needs to load a lot and sometimes, because of the massive environments and such, freezes. Those are the only bad things!

This game is a must have. I think its better than Halo! You have to get this if you like star wars, role-playing games, or if you dont like star wars or rpg's. You should get this game if you have an xbox!

I got this game because of the commercials and a few personal recommendations, it looked quite intriguing and I'm a big Star Wars fan.

There is no question that the number 1 reason to buy a game (versus renting) is the replayability. Having played a few different characters already, I can vouch for its replayability.
There are so many different options and paths you can explore and the character-to-character interactions are often interesting or hilarious. The game changes depending on how you play, and there are multiple endings. You could easily entertain yourself for hundreds of hours playing different characters all the way through to the end.

What I really enjoy about it is the flawless integration of the AD&D 3rd edition ruleset into the gameplay. If you are a dungeons & dragons fan, you will find the basis for all the calculations and game mechanics to be familiar and natural. If you're not, you will quickly learn a lot about D&D and best of all, the game calculates all of the complicated "to-hit" and "damage" calclations. Each statistic of your character makes a big difference on how you play your character. You can decide to give yourself a lot of Wisdom to be strong at Jedi powers, or just a lot of Strength and Dexterity to be an effective fighter.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this game except that quite often when you talk to aliens, the alien language starts to sound the same: the same "alien sounds" will be used to mean 10 different phrases. It gets irritating, but in no way does this affect the gameplay.

This game has a lot going for it, and it is probably the best put-together Xbox game so far. There are very few glitches (I came upon a glitch that corrected itself after a couple minutes of playing) but it has crashed once, which is disconcerting when you haven't saved for a while. But, never fear! There is always autosave to maintain your progress if you forget to save. It works about every 15 minutes.

Enjoy, and realize that dual-wield weapons is absolutely amazing...and impressive.

After playing this game for 16 days, (I finally finished it after 91 hours of game play), I now understand why this game won over 40 game of the year awards, it is just-that-good! Try not to breeze your way right through it though, or you'll miss a lot of the wonderful things that this game can bring to your gaming experience. Take your time, and enjoy it. Not your average type of game where you just mash the button to attack an enemy, this game requires you to think befor you do things. It really is a fun game to play. And overall, that's what playing games are all about... having fun!

This game is amazing. It's plot is better than that of the new Star Wars movies, and gameplay is great. But the real fun of the game is the fact that you can control the destiny of your character, they can be a republic lover like Carth and Bastila, or a dark side obsessed warrior like HK-47. If you like massive, open ended games you will love this.

THE BEST GAME EVER and STILL PLAYING IT!!!!!!!!!! If your anything like the hard core Star Wars fan and NEED to learn the ways of the FORCE (or scwartz) then this game would still be played. Knights of the Old Republic game made me want to go out and buy an XBOX (which it did). This game includes a near endless ways on how you interact with the other characters (in a good or bad way) and gives you character creation options (limited but still creative). I love that the ending and story changes when you choose either the light-side or dark-side. Thankyou soo much for making this game for Xbox now please will you kindly make it for PSP too soo I can carry it wherever I go?

My friend owns this game, not me. Even still, I am amazed at this game. In two days, I have played it for over 10 hours (it counts). The gameplay is awesome, plot is awesome, and it isn't a game that can be easily beaten. The part that I love the most is that you can choose whether your character will be good or evil, which will affect the game plot. I don't own an Xbox, but after playing this game, I am considering buying one.

I got this game for my birthday and I love it! It is one of the best games I've ever played. If you are planninng on getting this game then please do. It is really fun. The downsides sre that you don't start out with a lightsaber and you have to use blasters near the beggining of the game. Anyway you get to travel to around 8 planets in your starship. You can choose the path of the light or dark depending on your actions and you can choose from 60 force powers and feats. Well that's all, bye.

this game is probably the best rpg out there. the only rpg that compares to this would probably be marrowind.(one of my other favorites) this game is just so great in that you cannot find any real faults in it... the dialog is great. fighting is awesome... storyline is incredibly sweet... the graphics are pretty good... over all this is a must have i would have to recomend.. only bad part i can think of is that there is no cooperative play on the game... so u cant go and beat the game with ur friends... game length is long and not a better game u could buy for xbox. a must have in my opinion

Story (10/10):

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic puts you in a world of complete bliss and utterly fantastic awe. This is not just a shoot-em-up game, for within the millions of pixelated characters lies a story. A story with jaw-dropping, mind-blowing twists and turns and conclusions awaiting. Choose your path, for the first time, you can choose your own destiny rather than the creators.

This game is not just one plot, nor is it a mindless adventure trekking the whereabouts of the middle of nowhere looking for purpose. No, this game is many a quests and riddles, illusions and games inside to keep the gamers on their tippy-toes at all times.

Starting out as a mysterious rebel who does not know his/her own past, fight or peacefully sneak your way through the depths of several planets, each carrying many people with many stories. You may help these people, you may be there savior and deny a reward, or you may bash their helpless heads into their skulls to create your path to the dark side. All the while making the venture across native lands toward beoming a Jedi, encounter friends, enounter foes and convert them to friends if you ever so wish. It doesn't matter, because in the end it's only you facing the evil sith lord, toe to toe, lightsaber to lightsaber.

Gameplay (9/10):

The fighting system is somewhat random, but not entirely, you can choose to create a concrete combat fighter or a wizard casting spells such as lighting, wind, life draining, lightsaber throwing, etc. Many different various skills such as stealth, persuasion, even computer hacking and lockpicking (Sort of).

You can stay close using lightsabers, one in each hand or a double-bladed one. Or you stray afar using blaster rifles and pistols. You have many compainions, droids, jedis, dark side mercenaries and wookies, each with a charming, dramatic, or brutal life story, which will only be concluded as the game furthers on.

Very impressive dialogue and screenwriting, graphics and realism are also mediocre.

I can guarantee, with the low $20 price, this game will give you hours of fun, each day, for at least a month. And trust me, when that month is up, you will not want to get rid of it, you will get the urge to play it again because once you start this game you are hooked on a long-term engagement.

The only thing I find wrong with this game is it's sequel.

Pros:

~ Excellent sound, effects, dialogue, screenplay, scenery, designing and story writing.

~ Hundreds of weapons, armor, with belts, gloves, arm bands, implants and masks to further increase skills.

~ Hundreds of side quests with extravagant rewards and conclusions that will keep you in awe all day long.

~ No wondering from world to world in search of plots, they are usually easy to find but challenging (not boring) to accomplish.

~ No matter what, you can always play the game a different way, so you would be just beginning your quest as soon as you beat the game.

~ Neat little area from xbox live downloadable content, which can open up another plot and give you VERY nice weapons and two new lightsaber colors. (Turquoise, orange)

~ You can change the overall game difficulty, it's default setting is medium.

Cons:

~ No type of multiplayer games in any circumstance. It's surprising they didn't make a co-operative option.

~ Sometimes annoying loading transitions, can take maybe 10-15 seconds at most. I'd advise having some music handy if it's your 2nd or 3rd time through the game.
