An excellent buy! While it may not be as long and involved as Morrowind it will still keep you busy for a while. The game has a nice variety of armor and weapons. The ability to alter the world with acts of evil of good is a bit over exaggerated. At most you affect your appearance and the way people act when you are around. It has a solid story line and a good amount of side quests. If you've played the original then the Lost Chapters still has enough extra content for your money.
This Game Was Awsome....Still Is...I Could Play It 20 Times Over And Not Get Bored. I Reccomend This Game To People About 14 And Over. The People Who Made This Game Are To Be Commended. The Learning Curve Was....A Bit On The Long Side. Took Me An Hour. The Storyline Was Perfect...The Battle System Was A Tad Bit On The Harder Side But Was Still Good. The Limits Are Few And Allows You To Do Whatever You Want. Kill Townsfolk, Break And Enter, Marry, Kick Chickens, Beat Up Children...Thumbs WAAAAAY Up...As For The Review Below Mine....I Bet He's Never Even Played. Zelda Rules But This Game Does To. Buy The Game Before You Review It. If You Don't Buy This Game...Your Missing Out
I, along with many other people, have been waiting for this game's release for a very long time and it has fanally come. In my opinion, the game was worth the 4 years of waiting. There have been many changes to gameplay though. If you read an article somewhere at about the time the game was first mentioned, it will be much different than what reviews are saying now. You can no longer have the ability to plant a seed and see the tree in its place years later, kids will not dress their hair like yours, it's not completely free roaming like Morrowind, you can't make a frying pan into a legendary weapon, the game is not 50-60 hours long by any means. By saying all this it sounds like Fable is a waste- But it's not.
The good things definitely outweigh the bad. First, character developement is amazing, grow back and chest hair over time, muscles, get fat by drinking to much beer or eating to much, and much more. You can get married, buy houses, rent them out, shoot the windows out with a bow ( if someone sees you they will go running and tell the guards), the things like that is what I love. There are alot of clothing and armor types to choose from and many of them look awesome. There are many different types of tatoos and haircuts to get with each of them affecting your attractiveness, scariness, evil/good alignment (clothing and armor have the same effects). The music is perfect for the game. It is easily the best that I have heard in a game. The type of music changes as you move from place to place (scary in a graveyard, happy in a town).
I completed the game in about 12 hours strait through without doing any sidequests. It seems short to me but the replay value of the game is very good so you'll be wanting to play again. The thing that most people are missing though is the fact that YOU CAN CONTINUE THE GAME AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE MAIN QUEST. You MUST watch ALL of the CREDITS!! I had to "re beat" the game twice because I did not let the credits scroll through. If you select "skip scene" while the credits are scrolling it takes you directly to the title screen without saving your progress and without giving you the chance to continue playing for as long as you want. Do not think that the game actually does "end".
With all that said, in my opionion, Fable is an extrordinarily wonderful game that definitely deserves a playing.
I thought this was the original but it was not. however, this game is awesome--when i get to play it. between my son and husband i have only gotten to watch it which is just as good as playing at times. difinately a keeper
Here's the deal, this game was not meant for gamers who want to see the final video as soon as humanly possible. This game is about building your character in both a statistical aspect and social aspect. I couldn't begin to tell you everything you can do in this game.
I think a LOT of the bad reviews on here are coming from power gamers who were expecting a game that was SO good that there was no hope for it to live up to the expectations. Granted I think this game could have been a bit longer, and I would have loved a totally open ended play style like Morrowind, but you know what? Morrowind has so many options that most people get lost and never see half the game. It's the difference between going to a playground and going to an amusement park. Both are fun, but at the playground you can go anywhere and do anything... the amusement park has controlled areas you can do stuff. Just different styles.
This game is definitely a rental for people. Personally I don't regret playing this game, the possibilities are amazing. Haircuts that make you more attractive or scarier, gifts you can give to women (or men if you want to swing that way), boasting about how well you are going to do on quests to boost the renown you get for completing them.
They say the devil is in the details. I think that they set the bar at a great level in the details catergory. A little refinement on the length and openness of the game would make this one HELL of a title. I would LOVE for them to bang out a sequel to this. Don't listen to all the nay-sayers here... try it out yourself, but realize that all the hype that people got going here might taint your opinion. Take the game for what it is and enjoy the hell out of it.
Fable for the XBOX is a tough game to review. I am not going to touch upon what the game should've been.
The graphics in this games are beautiful. Very neat character models and tons of customization options, from haircuts to tattoos to boots. Character development and aging is noteworthy as well, being that through the course of the game, his physical features change due to the way he's acted over his lifespan. Hell, if you're evil, bugs follow where you go, swarming constantly around your body. Horns rip out of your skull and your eyes turn red.
You can also interact with many of the environments from breaking windows to breaking down doors to handing some broad a beer and getting her drunk.
The sound is very nice in that the NPCs talk as you pass them by in the forest or on cobblestown village street. They say different things to you depending on your algnment. The music is a dramatic orchestration that really sets the game's mood.
So why only 3 stars out of 5? The first few hours of the game were kind of fun (once you get past your training). It was fun to explore and develop your characters alignment, see his physical features change from doing good or bad deeds. When you start doing the missions, you realize that the game's complex menu system doesn't work in your favor. The "quick" menu, the D-pad on the left of the controller, allows you to assign different items for use in combat. The left stick is for character movement and the right stick is for camera control. To lock onto and enemy, you press the L button and attack with "B". To block and attack you hit the "A" button. To use magic, hold down the R button and use A,B,C,D button which executes a spell (user assign spells to these buttons). Fable is a game of many things. With all these commands, perhaps too much.
Here's the problem.
I said earlier that the first few hours of non-mission play are fun. But rarely in those first few hours are you thwarted by hoards of enemies. One, two, or three enemies attacking you at once? No problem. Six or seven hacking away at you? You will find your fingers in a knot from trying to use that control scheme I described above. Trying to remember all those commands, enemies swarming you at all sides, health restoration, locking on, switching from sword to magic, BLOCK THAT ATTACK!, use the D-pad to heal! After all is said and done, the battle system feels like a bad hack and slasher.
Your forearms will be sore. That shouldn't happen.
To wrap it up, while the graphics and sound are great, I must say that I'm not addicted to the game. Some games I can't put down, especially ones that give high level of customization. Based on my reasons against, I've concluded that once you get the feel of the Fable world, you find that it's faults strip away much of the fun.
Ninja Gaiden is one of the best games ever created. I decided to get an XBox primarily to be able to play this game.....it's that good.
Being an devout 'RPG'er I (like so many other Xbox owners) was completely thrilled at the fact that 'ole Mr. Gates' console is finally getting a bonafide RPG to add to it's repertoire. For all fans of role-playing games this was to be the end all, be all game of games for the RPG genre. And we so patiently waited for the grand "Fable" to arrive and entrance our minds for nearly 4 years now. This game has garnered much discussion and anticipation from the "underground" gamers abroad. All bets were off, this game was to revolutionize the way RPG's were to be programmed and played just as Final Fantasy VII had done to the genre in '97. Did it? Was Microsoft able to pull it off and alter the future of RPG's? Was it as great as anticipated or was it a huge dissapointment and a waste of time and money?
Well, according to the various forums, chat rooms, and reviews of it Fable is all of the above-It is both fabulous and a failure.
I personally can not honestly say that Lionshead Studio managed to reinvent the way RPG's are to be played, but I must say that the freedom in this game is grander than what I have experienced in all other RPG's to date. The premise that you start off as a young child (propably around 6-7 yrs. old) and age along with the story line as you progress in experience (all the way to senior citizenship) definately makes it easier to immerse yourself into the game. I have laughed to myself many a time now at how outright inpropable, and yet impowering, it is for a 65 year old man to manage to have women (and men alike) fall madly in love with his elderly "hero" self. The beauty of this game is that impowering impropability. Yes, I know all RPG's are games of donning someother reality, but still most of them still do not reach the depth of total control over your character as Fable has managed to do. The control over the Hero's appearance from hairstyles to facial hair is rare. Then add into it clothing, weapon of choice to wield, powers/attributes/abilities, moral/ethical choices, even sexuallity-heterosexual, gay, bi? It is all up to the player and however he or she may want to take it and then RUN with it! These types of decisions enable a deeper sense of connection with the character-shallow they may be, but they allow more control over character development than any other RPG that I have yet to play.
Unfortunately however the storyline is still rather linear AND VERY short. I completed the game in under 9 hours. The limitation in the length of the main story does not restrict freedom to "wander around" though. My latest replay of the game I have managed to strecth my 9 hour game to a 19 hour game and I am not even 2/3 done with it yet. So, Fable permits plenty of "filler" time (if you will) to make the game experience that more unique and personal to the gamer and the gamer's intentions during a run through. For example, if I want to be wickedly evil I can do so and still complete the game at my own pace hacking and slashing townsfolk, robbing them in the middle of night, or even killing them in thier sleep. Or another day I feel like being noble, virtous, pure and full of integrity so I defend my fellow man as he is attacked by a raid of bandits or trolls earning holiness. Then again another day I want the best of being both morally good and sinfully, immorally bad. And this where the twisted fun can really happen, because the gamer now has the opportunity to save his/her fellow man once again from the dreaded bandits and immediately following the now rescued person's gracious, flattering remarks YOU can now strike them dead, thus balancing out the games moral meter.
*Rescued Trader-"Thank you, kind sir. Hooray for the mighty (hero's title)!!"
*Hero-In response to the traders compliments and adoration you smash his face in with your (weapon of choice) thus killing him immediately.
Note: As I'm writing this review I realize that it may read quite disturbing that someone would find such a scenario enjoyable . . . well trust me IT IS.
All in all the heart of Fable is not the storyline nor the gameplay, which by the way is superb and quite easy to grasp almost immediately, but in the honest moral choices it asks the player to make. Nobility is honorable and gratifying, but let's all be honest here it's FUN to be bad. And having a game to explore some of these completely uncivilized decisions can be rather well . . . entertaining. I must add though that these moral decisions should be left to more socially/emotionally mature minds with enough reason to understand right and wrong, cause and effect. Fable should not be played by children who do not yet grasp the understanding of appreciation for life. In fact this statement should not even be neccessary, because the game itself is rated mature (17+), therefore these moral/ethical questions should not reach the minds of children nor young teens.
Fable is just that-a complete and total farce made up of whatever you choose it to be. Good, bad, indifferent the choice is yours. So why not have fun with it, because that's what RPG's are really about right? Making your 'own' Fable?
As far as whether or not one should own Fable, I recommend renting it for the average gamer and owning it for every RPG fan.
this game is so much fun. i could spend hours on end just playing the quest, side missions, and just plain killing people in the game.
First off: don't skip through the end credits. You can continue to play your game after finishing the main storyline.
What is with short XBOX action RPGs lately? At least it does a better job with towns that Sudeki. I don't think it quite tops Knights of the Old Republic overall, though it is very close.
There are so many cool things you can do, but I've found the controls and menus are surprisingly simple. One downside is I wish the melee combat had a little more depth: there is little in the way of combos.
I like that peoples' reactions to you will often vary depending on the circumstances, and your behavior. For example, attack a few wandering traders, and they will start to all run at the sight of you, once word gets around.
Even if the voice acting isn't Oscar quality, it at least is believable. I think they sometimes ham it up intentionally, though, which I think keeps it a bit fun. A lot of the interaction reminds me of The Sims games
The towns are a lot of fun to goof around in. Gambling, buying houses, and interacting with the people is a blast. I just wish there were more towns to do that in. Nevertheless, I wasted quite a few hours just in the towns.
Graphic quality is pretty high. I won't say too much, since it isn't that important to me, other than that there weren't any glaring problems there. It is nice to be able to see the small changes in my character with time. I tend to get down and just brawl in a fight, so my characters have often come out pretty scarred with time.
Also, the replay value is pretty high, due to the variety of possibilities in the character. Of course, if you just like finishing the storyline, then you won't find this to be the case. Me, I like trying things out and experimenting, and Fable is an excellent game for that.
Looooooooveeeeeeeeee killing people and then the police to get the max in evil points. Havent been good yet but ill get around to it.
One comment, everyone says you can have kids, no you cant. You can get married, but your wife(s) never have children. ]
Not that i care, but, im just correcting all these other guys.
Fable is a great game. After the relatively slow first hour (training and explanation of the good/evil gameplay elements) the game picks up and doesn't let go. The variety of gameplay styles and customization options is great and the game compels you to keep playing through and making your character the best he can be.
Gameplay: Playing through the first time, I thought I had made many good choices in terms of what to level up at the beginning of the game. After finishing the game, I realized I had access to several different options that would have worked well too. The fact that I finished the game without using those other options makes me want to replay the game. It also shows that you can play the game how you want to and make the choices you want, and still be able to succeed. I like the way the game ramps up its difficulty. You can revisit and area several times, and each time you get there, the enemies are tougher and smarter. This way, it's always a challenge but not overwhelmingly difficult or frustrating.
Character morality, whether you play good or evil, is not a gimmick. I personally could not be evil toward the end of the game because I did not want people to think badly of my hero for doing something evil. I wanted him to succeed, have a nice house, and have a good relationship with his husband (hooray for gay marriage). I even started to think about having a house in Bowerstone South, so if he ever adopted (not that you can do that in the game) his child could live in a place with other children where he or she could have friends and go to school. All the while I kept telling myself, it's just a game, but that is how attached you get to your character.
Graphics & Sound - Each area of Albion has its own look and style. The details in everything from the houses to the roads, bridges, etc. are amazing. This does feel like a real world. If you've ever been overwhelmed by Hyrule in the Zelda games, this game is even better.
The sound rivals that of Halo, not in style, but in quality. I would certainly buy this soundtrack if it ever became available. It's that good. The characters do repeat some of the same sayings again but it still feels good to have people call you liberator and cheer you on as you enter a town. The characters also comment on your recent exploits and what you need to do next.
Value and Reviewers Tilt - It took me 18 hours to complete the game doing just about all the side quests (I didn't do the evil ones since my character was good). That time did not include time in menus or anything else. If you add the time you spend buying spells, cycling through inventory, etc. playtime is more likely to be 20 hours or so. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward continue playing as good, and start a new game and be evil. I really want to see how the world changes. That will make the game a 36 to 45 hour one for me.
Closing Comments - While its true that this game may not have lived up to the hype of being the best RPG ever, it is incredibly good. Everyone with an XBOX should play this game at least once. It's like the grown up Zelda that you always wanted Nintendo to make but with a lot more characterization and options.
This game was very fun. It gives you a lot of options and choices which affect you later on. There are different skills and upgrades to aquire. I would recommend purchasing this game.
I suggest this game to anyone definately a grade A game for a great price.
Great, enjoyable game, its long so you wont finish it quickly and you will have fun.
PS:On Xbox 360 it freezes a lot but not on Xbox .
