my son has special needs. i am writing this review for him. he plays this hockey game a lot and just loves it. thanks for such a great video game and for the prompt delivery.
My son Darius and me play this game about 6 hours a day via Xbox Live. It's a great way for Darius and me to bond after his mother (my ex-wife) left me for Tom in Accounting. Its funny how woman always are drawn to money and think the grass is greener on the other side. I'm having the last laugh, because although Tom works with money all day, he doesn't take any of it home! Although I wasn't laughing when I got home from work early on a Thursday before my night class and caught her getting acquainted with Tom's slacks. I really like the board play in this year's game.
That title sounds like hyperbole, but it's true from my perspective. I love sports video games and hockey most of all, and I thought NHL 09 was the best hockey game ever...until NHL 10 came around. I have probably played hundreds of hours of NHL 09 over the past year, and this game does an excellent job of taking everything that was good about that game and making it even better. I don't see myself getting sick of it anytime soon.
As a caveat, I do not play online. This is a review based on my single-player experience, which is my preferred way to play.
While the changes in NHL 10 are in large part subtle refinements of NHL 09, this isn't just a roster update. The "Be a GM" mode - formerly franchise mode - has been completely overhauled to give you GM-specific challenges and rewards as you play through the seasons. A few other new game modes - single playoff and single season modes, basically - have been added as well.
The main improvements in my opinion are found in the on-ice gameplay, which has been enriched by the ability to control the aim on passes, board play, the new fighting engine, scuffles after the whistle, better goalie animations, and better AI. The game experience is completely customizable and there are slider pre-sets for arcade-like, simulation-like, and intermediate gameplay (intermediate is the default).
Professional reviews will be able to tell you a lot more about this game than I will, so let me just say that everything you love about NHL 09 has only been improved. It's rare to see an EA Sports development team that really delivers and works hard year-after-year, and this team does exactly that. You can tell that there is a real passion and desire among the developers to make the best hockey game possible. They did it last year, and they did it again.
I have not encountered the AI problems that the other reviewer did in playing this game in single-player mode. Perhaps I am just used to the way the game plays, or perhaps that reviewer needs to explore the create a play option to get better performance from his AI teammates.
If you like hockey, buy this game. If you love sports games (and don't HATE hockey), buy this game. I've been let down by EA Sports many, many times in the past (most recently with Madden 10). This game is nothing short of triumphant.
Gift for teenage sons, both hockey players and they love this. Custom teams, good controls, graphics, fights - boys' comments that all very well done, even for hockey players who actually do this on real ice! Well, except for the fighting...
I may be biased because hockey is my favorite sport but I've been playing sports video games for over 15 years now and this is probably in the top two sports video games I've ever played (MLB 09 The Show being the other one). The game play gets better year after year and this year with the addition of board play it is even more realistic than ever. I was worried when I heard they were adding board play but after one or two games it felt natural and certainly isn't forced. If you like hockey at all you will love this game, highly recommended.
They say it every year, but this one really is the best Hockey game ever made. The game play, including the scrums and the fights, is far and above better than any other. The graphics are much better also, but it is typical for them to improve each year. If you are a hockey fan I greatly recommend it, and it will be very difficult for them to top it in September when the next game is released.
Excellent game. It is too bad that it stayed $60 until after the Stanley Cup playoffs were over so I ordered it early on here and got it for the current price after reduction. Great game. The Be a Pro mode is addictive and fun.
Seemless transaction - quick delivery - no problems! Game works fabulous! Kids very satisfied. Thanks!
For those who own NHL 09, you will not be dissapointed with NHL 10. While it isn't a huge leap like 09 was, I do find the subtle upgrades nice. The fighting for the puck on the boards is something I like, I've actually found that I use it quite a bit. The first person fighting is just ok to me, it's fun but nothing to get terribly excited about. Unlike one reviewer here, I generally only play on line, compared to single player. Either way though I don't think you can go wrong with this game. Be it single player or on line, this is one of the best sports games out there.
As one of the top online players in the world for this EA Sports hockey franchise in the past few years I have to say that this was the fairest and most enjoyable game that EA has put forth. Not too many glitches to worry about and many improvements were made in the gameplay and camera angles for Be a Pro Mode.
nothing in this game has changed to much..only real different game play is fighting along the boards for the puck, (which you dont use to to much) and an actual fighting system which had many people scratching there heads in NHL 09 on how to fight. other then that gameplays seems about the same, i noticed shots from the point give more realistic chances for rebound goals then in 09.
another really great upgrade is the GM mode. wow...this almost gets complex. players have trade values, buyouts, teams have rumors of whos on the chopping block, you can put 3 players you want traded into the rumor mill, you can tell other teams what your looking for ex. offensive defense athelitic or draft picks.
its such an upgrade over last years, your general manager actually has a reputation,
anyway this is a good game, my review kinda rambled and went on longer then i wanted but if your a fan of the NHL EA series i would suggest buying this, no turn offs that i can see nothing drastic has changed. enjoy
Loved this game. Many new features and clear and sharp views. Plays like the real game.
I have had the game since Christmas, and love it as much then as I do now.
I've played the playoff mode, the regular game mode, the normal season mode, but I particularly love the be a pro mode.. Still yet to play the be a GM mode...
With the various settings and skill levels, it makes the game enjoyable for me, along with my kids.. Often with the skill difference between me and my kids, we play on the same team which makes it a little challenging when one of your players is way out of position, but then again, makes for a killer break out...
The graphics are definitely top notch, and they've covered everything, from sitting on the bench in be a pro mode, or in the penalty box, to the replays..
The only downside I can find is that the commentary is often repetitive and does get old, boring and is sometimes completely irrelevant (well ok, so not far from live TV!).. But the sound of skates, passes, shots, shots blockered away, pad saves are very close to real... Also like hearing the players call for passes, shots, for the goalie to cover the puck, etc...
All in all, it's a great game.
I have the last 3 EA NHL games for the past 3 years. This one is the best! Fighting is an awesome feature in this game. Very intricate. Pinning the puck on the boards is also new, adding realistic possesion game in the offensive zone. Enjoy!
Bought this game for my husband for Christmas (along with the XBOX 360 itself) and he is in love with this game! The graphics are amazing and there are so many different options that you can really make this game personable. Well worth the money.
