I've been playing the 2k series for years, and while 8 wasn't a giant leap forward, and 9 had some issues, nba 2k10 is just a bad video game. It's created more problems without solving old ones. A few nice features like association mode or the gimmicky myplayer mode don't fix this game's glaring problems. First, online play is terrible- if you need confirmation, just check out any number of other reviews. It was released broken and hasn't been fixed. Second, the AI is still awful. The four guys you are not controlling regularly blow assignments, don't challenge shots, never play passing lanes or go for the ball: some of this can be fixed with sliders but the default settings are flat out broken. The controls are also awful: players you control act on a delay (that increases in online play) so that often you make an open pass to a guy running towards the basket and he will patiently wait for the opposing player to catch up before making a move. Defense is unintuitive and needs to be re-built, period. It's actually gotten worse than it was 2 years ago. The most inexcusable thing is the lag- even in offline modes lag creeps in, taking an already frustrating game and making it ten times worse. 2K needs to stop focusing on slightly improved graphics and re-recording audio and actually fix what's wrong with this series. Right now it's a basketball simulator that doesn't accurately simulate basketball AND isn't fun to play.
If you're interested in playing a basketball video game, do yourself a favor and go back to NBA Live 2001-2002 years. The games nowadays are just horrendously terrible. This is probably the worst. The gameplay couldn't be worse. Choppy movements, choppy camera angles. No fluidity whatsoever. A crossover takes your player about 10 seconds and then the computer will pull off the most insane moves that's inpossible to defend. I'll hold the joystick in a direction and it will take a couple second to respond. I'll have a wide open lane and my player just slowly walks down the lane awaiting a defender to come, and create contact which means the layup will not go in. Game also couldn't be more unfair. Your team will make no shots, their team will make every shot. I never knew Andrei Kirilenko could hit so many threes. Comically unfair. If there is any body contact what soever when you attempt a layup, it will not go in. Running plays are impossible. Some things happen that just make you laugh out loud.
Now, let me address the real catastrophe, the My Player mode. I'm not sure if I've ever had less fun in my entire life. I'm actually upset I've wasted several hours doing this. I made the NBA right away even though my guy was bad. Within two NBA games, my guy was playing the entire 48 minutes. He would be dead tired, couldn't even use turbo, yet they wouldn't take my guy out. Missing wide open layups, wide open threes. My guy is 0-8, 4 turnovers and playing terrible defense yet they are playing me all game. I'm only rated a 51, I can't compete with these guys. But they never take me out of the game, it's horrible. Whenever you pass the ball, the player you pass to will immediately shoot and miss a shot. Then on defense, their team makes absolutely everything. I've played 5 NBA games. I've lost each by 40 points every time with my team shooting 20% and their team shooting 75%. Guys like CJ Miles hitting 5 threes. It's really unbelievable, I can't say enough bad things about it. The last four minutes of the game I just played, I didn't even move my player, and they still kept him in the whole game. And they're playing me instead of Chris Paul.......
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!
Although there are a few nice features about this game, there is far more negatives then positives. First off let me start off by saying that I have bought every game that 2k has made, but the last 2 years have been my 2 least favorite in the series. Maybe it is just me and maybe it is because I am not a hardcore gamer anymore, but I just want to sit down and enjoy a game, but I can't do that with this game. It is impossible to make any shots as I shoot wide open 3 pointers and even lay ups at times and they won't go in. I can't even beat the computer unless I am on rookie, but forget playing anything harder they make every shot imaginable. I guess I am just waiting for an explanation from the creators to tell me why the heck did they make this game so dang hard. I am suprised it has got such high ratings I wouldn't rate it higher then a 6 out of 10, but since it is rated at almost 9 out 10 I am forced to give a 1 star to make it close to its real rating. If you enjoy great graphics and a challenge(in a sports game) then maybe this is for you and you can disregard this message, but if your anyone like myself that doesn't want to have to memorize about 20 buttons and tons of plays just to win a game(literally you can't pick up this game and just play and have fun its just frustrating). Hopefully you make the right choice.
Well I waited awhile to review this game until I got a real feel for it.
I must say it took me about a week to really appreciate the subtle changes that 2k10 has made.
1) The oops off the glass to a team mate or to yourself is a plus... and the Put back Slams are nuts.
2) The ratings of team are no longer high so there is no 1 dominant team, every team can be a threat.
3) Smoother Online play.
4) Improved defense... and the stamina meter makes is so people can't run around all day with KOBE, LEBRON and D WADE all game like in 2k9.
5) Smarter AI this year it actually feels like you're playing a real person... The computer ain't dumb no more they'll make the extra pass to the open man or make you pay for a blown defensive cover.
6) My player mode gives the game more playability no longer just a season or online game and it actually improves your basketball IQ for playing in Crews mode or Team Matches.
7) Being able to use your created player online is also a plus .
8) The dribbling is crazy you can literally break defenders down, make them slip trip and everything else and it looks real not all arcadish.
Cons:
1) GLITCHES... you got a fast break going in for the stuff and your dude takes the slowest 2 steps to the basket in the world... Not all the time but it takes away from the smoothness of the game.
2) There are other delays here in there sometime the Ref and the Person taking the ball out tend to play Catch back in forth for like 30 of 40 seconds.. whats that all about. And there are a few other things that can affect game play here and there.
All in all I like this game it just feels more real to me than other B-Ball games. In my opinion it provides for the most realistic NBA experience. The game play is spot on. All though there are Glitches they are not a deal breaker plus 2K is releasing a PATCH for it soon so this game will be the Premiere game it is always been.
I am truly impressed with how little amount of time a company can put into a game, create a huge hype and then make boatloads of money. The online play is unplayable.
Let's start with the controls: If you want to feel like you are playing basketball on ice in tennis shoes, then buy this game. There is so much delay from when you order your player to move (or stop moving) to when they actually do it, you almost start to wonder if they put this in for a "realistic" effect. There are two problems with this. 1.) Reality isn't fun. and 2.) They didn't do it on purpose. The controls work significantly better in offline mode, but that doesn't help someone that plays almost exclusively online.
Gameplay: The gameplay is, for the most part the same as previous versions of the game, with one major difference... once again, the ONLINE! There is so much slowdown that when combined with the controls, it feels like you are sometimes playing basketball in the Matrix. They made the gameplay a little more realistic and difficult. Personally, I'm not a fan of this, but it is way down on the list of complaints
Graphics: Nothing to complain about here, other than that Shaq looks like a zombie
Sound: Personally, I think this area is where 2kSports really shows their stripes. The other complaints that I have about the game regarding gameplay and controls can be explained away as "glitches". Nevermind that they obviously didn't spend enough time testing the game (if any at all). But to me, the sound is simply unexcusable. I skipped NBA2k9, so NBA 2k8 is the last game that I have to base my opinion off of, but I was genuinely SHOCKED to find that much of the audio commentary is recycled from a game from 2 years ago! I'm not asking for anything groundbreaking here, but at least word your cliche statements or use different inflection to indicate to me that someone actually cared at all about how this game turned out.
Fun Factor: If you were having a couple friends over and playing in the same location, I could see how this game could be very fun. However, if you intend to play online at all, forget about it. I have heard good things about the "My player" mode, but considering I am primarily an online player, this comes secondary to me and honestly, after playing one online game, I had seen enough.
Replay Ability: It's basketball, every game is different. High replay ability.
I played my buddies game and I am glad I did not waste my money. This game has glitches and the frame rate problem is real. Maybe I will have to check out LIVE again. I cant believe they would sell this game, what a downgrade from last year.
