I go to school most of the year and don't bring my systems with me, so I have very little time to devote to games. I was excited enough about Bayonetta to make it my only purchase for the next six months because I enjoyed Devil May Cry, though I thought it had a lot of problems that needed to be fixed. They were, and how. It was definitely the right choice.
Bayonetta is very much a fully formed game; there are no constant, nagging problems that could have been easily fixed like there are in most first games in a series. Hideki Kamiya made the first Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta definitely uses that game as a stepping stone to start doing brand new things with the genre. Unlike DMC or Ninja Gaiden (which I also enjoyed a lot), the difficulty curve in Bayonetta is very smooth without ever letting you feel comfortable. It's difficult the whole way through (whereas Ninja Gaiden, say, spikes at the Alma fight and never picks back up.) It's also never hair-pullingly tough (and if you want it to be, start a new game in hard mode)
But most importantly, it's fun. The combat system is very fluid, giving you a lot of choices in your moves and making sure they're all entertaining to watch. While the overt sexualization of Bayonetta is unfortunate (I'll just never be 14 years old again), the actual actions you undertake are ridiculous and tongue-in-cheek enough that it's mostly not that offensive until the very end. The rest of the game is a campy joyride, with some of the most over-the-top boss battles I've ever seen. If you ever played Contra 3 and gaped in awe as your characters jumped from one missile to another shooting an enormous alien, you'll have an idea of the scale things get to here. Bayonetta is the son of Contra, and I can't think of many better compliments to give.
For all that this game is getting hype about the sexualization of the protagonist and the ridiculous camerawork and the like, underneath all the self-parody is an incredibly solid game with excellent controls and thoroughly entertaining gameplay. While the storyline borders on (and frequently crosses over into) the ridiculous and/or incomprehensible, at the end of the day, that's not why you're playing this. Bayonetta is FUN. Combat - the core of the gameplay - is accessable, challenging and deep, and only rarely interrupted by 'puzzle' and 'platform' segments.
While this title was compared to Darksiders fairly heavily due to the timing of the release of both games, and the fact that both are 3rd person action games, fundamentally, they are extremely dissimilar. Where Darksiders has shallow combat and extensive puzzle/platforming segments, combat in Bayonetta is varied, interesting, and entertaining, and rarely off center stage for more than a couple of minutes.
If you have any doubts about this title, I suggest trying out the demo - it's extremely representative of how the game plays, as well as its unique... visual style. If you enjoy the demo, the full game is more of the same with icing on top.
Bayonetta is the best action game I have ever played. This game is along the lines of Ninja Gaiden and Devil May cry with a little Viewtiful Joe thrown in the mix.
The combat is absolutely fantastic and the controls are solid. Anytime you mess up / lose a fight / die you know it's YOUR fault, not the fault of sluggish response or broken enemies.
Let's be fair: most games these days are easy. You play through one time without much of an issue and there's no reason to go back. This is not the case with Bayonetta. The game is difficult, but not frustrating. There are a TON of unlockables (items, weapons, characters, etc.) and the scoring/rating system will keep arcade-style players busy trying to earn better combos, times, and awards.
Sadly, may people will overlook this game due to the lack of hype around it. Those people will miss out on a solid game with tons of BANG for the buck.
Bayonetta is by far the best pure action game ever,There is so much to do in this game its unbelievable.Bayonetta is a witch but fights like a god ,her techniques are insane as well as her powers, the games story you'll have to see for yourself but you won't care about that after you start playing, nothing is repetitive like other reviewers are saying every time your in a new place something crazy happens during fights you can also upgrade your techniques and get new weapons, the graphics are superb you must play this game on a hdtv to really see the flawless beauty of Bayonetta.
Very impressed with the ultra fast paced, well presented, fun gameplay. Replayability is immense and there are lots of options for upgrades and unlockables. This is basically a no brainer for any Devil May Cry fan, and for those looking for a breath of fresh air in this genre. Bayonetta simply kicks ass :)
In my opinion of course, i don't want to "offend" anyone, but this is the best action game I have played. Now, these hack and slash games aren't really for me. Devil May Cry 3 was boring after awhile, and the same for Ninja Gaiden(i cant remember which one, hmm...). Maybe because I was terrible at them, or maybe because something just felt....repetitive, dull, non-exciting. Now back to Bayonetta. Bayonetta however, just felt....better. The graphics are beautiful, there is no denying that. the cutscene are a joy to watch, even if they are a bit, cliche. Emphasis on "a bit". The story....had me confused a bit. It made more sense towards the end, which makes sense, but something about it still has me scratching my skin. Voice acting was fine, nothing to complain about. The gameplay, is obviously an action game, similar to God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, etc. The one thing that makes this game stand out(well there are several, but this is the big one) is witch time. Dodging at the right moment lets Bayonetta go into a mode called Witch Time, which slows everyone down around you, allowing you to slash some angels while their frozen. Speaking of frozen, what I also liked about Bayonetta were the different combination's of guns, ice skates, swords, wip, claws, etc that you could make, allowing the gameplay to be fresh, longer. I beat the game on normal at around 13 hours, so I'm not sure if I was a bit slow getting around, or If i just zoomed past everything, but that's a pretty good time for a campaign, not including all of the accessories, weapons, techniques, and clothing you can unlock. I would def give this game a try, at least a rent. it deserves it.
A sexy witch with magical hair, sporting 4 guns (yes, two times the John Woo action!!) and beatin' the crap outta angels..............yeah when you actually write it out on paper it sounds like a recipe for extreme suck. But much to my satisfaction Bayonetta pulls it off. This game is by far one of the best Dante/God of War-esque beat 'em up/shoot 'em up I've played in a long, long time. I hear a lot of whining about the story and yeah most of it is straight out of a B movie and the fan service is way over the top, but this isn't supposed to be a game where youre aching to see the next cut-scene. This is a game where you put your mind AND reflexes to work on making angel-smashing combos of doom. The action is rock solid and Bayonetta moves exactly the way you want her to. The achievement system keeps me coming back to beaten levels over and over again to get the platinum statues (plus it never hurts to gather a few extra halos as the prices in market are Devil May Cry expensive!!). The graphics are great on my HD set and the soundtrack is definitely something different (the JPOP kinda threw me at first, but now I cant get it out of my head.....in a good way). Theres even some FPS action thrown in between rounds in a silly game called Angel Attack where you shoot stuff to either get more gear or halos (you know Sega has a thing about collecting rings). I just cant say enough about this game. The combat is awesome, the graphics are sweet and the music grows on you. 2 GUNS UP!!!
I just have to say, this game has one of the best histories ever. The cinematic, graphics, audio are really high quality renders with much fun, story line, action, etc. Don't hesitate on buying this game if fun is what you're looking for...
This is one of the best games of this generation... Totally recommendable for action-games lovers as myself ;-)
Definitely a game worth the money. I rarely find that a game is worth $50.00+, but this is definitely one of them. The action is non-stop and crazy at times. The sheer imagination put into this game is staggering. Although it follows a Devil May Cry pattern, it is truley a unique game worth the admission.
The Good:
* Non-stop action even after the credits roll.
* Lots of weapons and spells for Bayonetta to use.
* One of the best soundtracks in a video game in a long time.
* Great replay value and difficulty levels to fit any gamer.
* Great story pulls you in, which makes it hard to put the controller down.
* Great use of animation and cinematics.
The Bad:
* Button-mashing may not appeal to everyone.
* Some camera angles may get in the way.
The Bottom Line:
If I have to compare this game to another, I would have to say that its probably "Heavenly Sword" for PS3. Since Heavenly Sword was a PS3 exclusive, XBOX360 users can immerse themselves into exciting adventure of Bayonetta. For those who wonder why this game is Rated "M" for mature: While Bayonetta is an eye candy, there is no nudity or sexual situations in this game. However, there are plenty of f-words to go around. Why did they decide to put in the f-words and make it Rated-M instead of Rated-T is beyond me, but regardless almost everything about this game is great. Soundtrack fits well. One of the first tracks you'll hear will be a Frank Sinatra remix of "Fly Me to the Moon," which is worth the price of admission alone. In terms of battles, the game relies mostly on button mashing, but there are also other elements, which include spell-like abilities and item forging. You earn halos along the way for defeating enemies that you can redeem for new and more powerful items.
Looking at 1-star reviews, I noticed a common complaint, which is last boss being hard. Please do not let it scare you away. This game has several difficulties. As soon as I got stuck on Normal, I switched it to Easy(yes, you can switch difficulties in mid-game, so you don't have to restart!) I actually defeated(barely) last boss on my first try. Even if you can't, there is also a Very Easy difficulty that I personally haven't tried, but I'm sure it will be suitable for beginners.
I will not spoil the game for you, but as I said, this is part movie-part game. You will spend a lot of time watching the cinematics between all the action(I believe at one point, the cinema lasted for 5 minutes.) It is that combination that pulls you in as you watch the movie and then get to be a part of it.
Bayonetta in my opinion is the best action game of 2010. If you are into the Devil May Cry series then you need to pick this title up. If the creators decide to make another one I will be buying that one to.
After watching the video review of this game on a popular gaming website, I decided to purchase it. The reviewer, David Clayman, went out of his way to note how much better this game is on the 360 versus the PS3, noting that longer load times and washed-out graphics on the PS3 version made this game virtually unplayable for him in comparison with the 360 version (although, he still gave the PS3 version a respectable 8.2/10. Go figure). Anyways, I boot up the game and start playing and, lo and behold, the game lives up to the hype Clayman heaped on it. The controls are tight, albeit cumbersome to pull off on the clunky 360 controller (to me, the 360 controller will always pale in comparison with the Playstation Dualshock controller series, but that's just my opinion). The graphics are stunning, the action frenetic, the pacing tight, etc., etc. I'm thinking, wow, good purchase there. Way to start the year. Then, out of nowhere, in the middle of playing, my 360 seizes up and freezes. I re-boot, keep playing, and, what do you know, it freezes again. This keeps on happening consistently after about 30 minutes of gameplay. So, I decide to investigate what's going on.
I go to the internet, look up and apply various solutions (cleared the cache, made sure the unit was not plugged into a multi-socket powerboard, make sure the unit was kept cooler than Barrow Alaska in February, etc.), and the same problem persists. My thinking is that the 360 is headed straight towards a 3-rings-of-death scenario, and soon. I play another game, play it for a while, and no freezing. Put in yet another game, play for another while, and no freezing. I try out practically all of the games in my library, includeing very graphics-intensive and frenetic games similar to Bayonetta, and my 360 performs just fine. Maybe it's just a bum copy of the game, but as you can tell from my description above, I went back to it again and again, so there is nothing wrong with the gameplay, just my copy. Thankfully, my 360 works just fine even since.
Anywho, I went to EB Games to get $27 of trade-in value for now, and will re-purchase the game later on as the price will come down to try it again, as it is pretty sweet.
