First off, let me start by saying that up until about 6 months ago I was an avid exerciser. I worked out HARD at least 3-4 times per week and did a lot of cardio. I've completed about 3 half-marathons and usually did at least one short 3 mile run a week. Unfortunately I've had to have surgery on both my feet since November because of foot pain. Fast forward to me just getting the okay to start doing a little bit of low impact cardio from my doctor.
Walking outside is out - concrete and pavement are too hard for my healing tootsies. Walking on the treadmill is out because my balance is not back to 100 percent yet. That brought me to Walk it Out. I saw it as a goldbox deal in February and ended up snagging it, figuring that even if I didn't use it I could pass it along to my nephew.
When I got the okay to start exercising again I popped WIO in the wii and was hooked. I use mainly the nunchuck and I'm able to walk on my nicely cushioned living room floor in my nicely cushioned shoes. I've been using it at least 3-4 times a week for about an hour at a time and it's really helping me to slowly build up the strength in my legs again. The best part - even my exercise-hating hubby has started using it.
Even as I get stronger and I'm able to take up my normal exercise routine again, I imagine that I'll keep using WIO for those days when the weather isn't cooperating or I want something lower impact. Can't recommend it enough, you actually forget you're exercising.
Walk It Out is a great motivator to walk more, I have had it for about a week and have been using it every day. Each day my step count increases and the map becomes more intersting as I unlock new routes, new placeables (buildings, cars, benches, bridges, etc.), new music and new times on the magical clock.
I have been using it with the nunchuk and find that it records my steps without a problem. Sometimes I need to reset the controller by removing and re-serting the battery pack; however, this problem occurs with all Wii games.
The game encourages you to walk at a rather fast pace in time to the music, as going slowly will cause your point total (which you use to unlock events) to go down. You can change the difficulty to easy and walk at a slower pace if you want.
The map I am finding is quite big once you unlock more routes - routes to the fountain, beach, mountain, ranch, etc. To unlock some routes you need to unlock the Suspension Bridges that lead to that area (lookout mountain, ranch, etc). As you populate an area with shops, buildings, food carts and other items the area comes alive with more people characters.
All in all a solid game for those looking for cardio exercise.
I am having a blast getting to know this game. The lack of detailed instructions is actually OK with me because I am forced to explore and discover what the Island is all about on my own through trial an error. Maybe that is what the creators had in mind when they made this game.
I am gradually figuring things out. At first I was confused and wondered if had wasted my money. Now that I am firmly entrenched in the adventure, I love it! It's whimsical. It's creative. And its just plain fun!
I have had the most success in registering steps accurately by using the Konami DDR mat. I get mostly perfects with that. The balance board works fine but I prefer more variety of motion. I can dance around, use my step, jump, etc. if I use the nunchuck method. I have ordered a Needak rebounder and am anticipating using that to encourage a more vigorous workout without causing my knees and feet to ache (easy to do that with so much marching in place),
I suggest using a heart rate monitor if you really want to get the most out of this workout. I typically burn more calories and work in my target range more successfully with "Gold's Cardio" and "EA Active." So wearing the monitor now causes me to put more effort into walking (using an aerobic step, for instance) to accelerate my heart rate.
I should also add that it works great with my elliptical! The up and down motion measures my steps with the nunchuck accurately.
I, too, hope they will create more of these games. It's so much fun to get exercise this way!
I received this game in the mail this afternoon and immediately started playing it. I wanted to see if the reviews were true and I couldn't use the balance board with it. I don't like using the nunchuk and wiimote for exercise since I'm a cheater and can "jog" without getting off the couch. The game says to not step off the board, but you can with no problems! I did run into the glitch with using the board and then pausing the game and that rendering the game useless, but other than that the balance board was great. I haven't tried the other 2 methods yet, because I liked it so much with the board! I also liked that I could switch from marching, to heel lift walking, to hip swaying to get the steps to register. I feel like it worked many different parts of my body which is a plus!
I wouldn't recommend trying the game for the first time at night though! I was so lost on the island because I spent my chips on songs and not street lights. I have zero clue where I was but it was still a blast! The music is upbeat and varied if you spend the first few trips around the island focusing on unlocking music and I liked that the tempo changed from a normal walking pace to almost a jog.
I highly recommend this game! If it weren't almost 9:00 and I was walking on a dark island, I would still be marching away because this game is so addictive.
First, let me say that I really enjoy this game. I'm the kind of person who cannot walk just for the sake of walking, but with this game, there are thousands of "capsules" to work for, which makes the time fly while you're using it.
There have been a number of comments about using the balance board with Walk It Out. I don't know why the directions tell you not to lift your feet off the board -- Wii Fit Plus has a walking game, and you can walk on the board as long as you don't jump on it. So, I figured that Walk It Out's "rule" came from Konami not wanting complaints if you break your board. So, I've ignored their over-caution and just walked on the board and it's worked great. I'd also recommend using the Wii controller and the nunchuck at the same time -- the controller to open capsules and set your direction and the nunchuck to change the "camera" view.
The one problem I have had is having my 3 year old play. We tried multiplayer mode, with me on the balance board and her on our dance mat, but, I don't know if it's because she's pretty tiny or what, but even in easy mode, it didn't seem to register her steps at all. It would also be nice to set difficulty by player, rather than sessions, so that her avatar could always be set to the easy levels.
All in all, a fun way to get some indoor exercise.
I have several other Wii fitness games and purchased this one for a more casual aerobic workout. I also figured the kids might make some use of it since it looked fun. After several days, I am still undecided about whether it was a good purchase but I'm trying to keep an open mind!
CONTROLLER+NUNCHUK Option: I tried this choice first so I could use it while walking on my treadmill. I had to put the nunchuk pretty close to my knee in order to have it correctly register every step; maybe this is due to the fact that the 'bar' of my treadmill was blocking the nunchuk-->controller visual during part of the walk? I enjoyed using the treadmill and simply varied the speed to keep in time with the various tunes. CONS with this option: 1)keeping the nunchuk aligned with the controller so all steps counted; 2)selecting the icons along the route was almost impossible---too much jiggling with the treadmill and the fact that I was really WALKING.
CONTROLLER+BALANCE BOARD Option: Against the advice of the game, I actually lifted my feet on the board (but softly). I didn't have an issue staying on the board. It was much easier to select the icons this way since my body was notmoving as much as when on the treadmill. CONS with this option: 1)this version of walking-in-place is definitely not a real aerobic workout compared to the treadmill; it is certainly, however, working other muscles in your calves and thighs so I guess that might be a bonus; 2) keeping in true step was more difficult on the board---so I didn't rack up as many points. The second time I used the board, I got my little girl to do all the "clicking" with the controller so I could just concentrate on walking. That was a lot easier and she felt like she was "playing" the game too.
I will try the Controller+dancemat option tonight but I expect I will have similar issues as with the board since again you're not really WALKING.
Overall I think it has potential. It's not as boring as walking on the treadmill alone so that's good. Unlocking the different icons is interesting and the music is varied in speed and type, which I like. One thing I did NOT like initially was the fact that the game began with me walking "in the dark" since I have done the game late at night each time. I have not yet unlocked the Magic Clock that will allow me to change the time of day in the game so I am still walking under the stars. The game does not have enough instruction in the manual itself so pay attention the first few times you play to your Trainer who is explaining some of the details!
I purchased Wii Walk It Out in the hopes I'd get a little exercise on a daily basis. I've had it for a couple of weeks and find that I am totally engaged and easily getting over 10,000 steps every day. I have set up an area in my garage so that I am walking/stepping on a cushioned surface. I love it. The game is addictive and fun. The music to walk to is upbeat and adds another motivation for me to use the game. I break up my walking sessions...usually two times per day. I have noticed that I am sleeping better since I've started using this game. I fall asleep faster and I sleep through the night. I can't tell you how long it has been since both those statements were true for me. I highly recommend Wii Walk It Out.
This game is alot of fun. You can personalize your Mii. I really worked up a sweat after less than 45 minutes. Its a little difficult to walk and click on items but after a while I got the hang of it. The music isn't too bad, either. Only real difficulty I found was using the nunchuk. Its best if you put it in your pocket but I don't have any pants to work out in that have pockets. I tried putting it in the pocket of my sweatsuit jacket but it doesn't always register. Reading other reviews on here, I decided against using the Wii Balance Board as you don't get the same benefit since you really can't/aren't supposed to pick up your feet to walk on it. Anyway, simple solution to my nunchuk problem = buy pants with pockets! If you buy this game, you and your family should really enjoy it.
I am 46 yrs old & I love this game. It is so much more fun than the tread mill and time goes by so much faster.
I just got done playing Walk it Out. An Exercise Game for the Wii. I own other Exercise games, including the wildly popular and expensive Wii Fit. I really love Walk it Out! It has to be the most fun I've ever had exercising in my entire life! I hate exercise so much. While other people say exercise makes them feel better after they finish... makes them feel motivated, happy, energetic, etc... for me it does not. My best friend and several of my friends online swear that after you get into exercising every day your body starts to look forward to it. But I say that's a myth. My body rejects and hates exercise really. Even when I was going to the gym before 4 days a week, I had to force myself to go, and it took every ounce of mental power I had to do it.
So I got wii fit, thinking, ok I might actually want to do this. - It sorta worked for awhile... But you see... I get very bored with things very quickly. So I quickly went from every day on wii fit, to every 2-3 days, to once a week, to every other week, to going 2-3 months without using it. I've been trying to ease back into it 2-3 times a week now that I've committed to wanting to lose weight. But it still just wasnt very fun.
I ordered Walk it Out yesterday, thinking I would do it and wii fit, kinda mix it up day to day, to make it less boring. I wasn't sure what to think. The box art, is very poorly designed, targeting the game to 7-10 year olds. The opening video also seems to tell me, this game is not for a 29 year old woman pursuing her master's degree...
However... from the moment the actual game play started... I was hooked. I typically get tired after 30-35 minutes on wiifit. I went for 48 minutes on Walk it Out (it doesnt count time, but I had made a phone call right before I started, so I checked my phone to see that the call was made 48 minutes ago.) In this short time, I burnt 147 calories. But most of all I had FUN doing it. Unlike reviews I had read of the game, I actually had no trouble at all adjusting to the heel tapping method, keeping my toes on the wii balance board. It felt more like bopping around, dancing, kinda, just seemed to be natural to me, and fit the tempo and music. I took to it like a duck taking to water, And what's more amazing is, I normally do not dance. I have NO rhythm. Last time I tried, (I was forcibly dragged to the dance floor by a waitress on a cruise ship) After making a fool of myself, I was told (by the same waitress, who was a complete stranger) "there's classes for this sort of thing honey". So I would say Walk it Out's learning curve is really low. I think it's a game anyone can just pick up and do right out of the box from day one. I didn't even read the manual.
By the 5th or 6th song, I was singing along. It has a great mix of songs that cross many generations. For example in the short time I played I walked in step to Boom Boom Pow from this year, Vacation from the 80s, and crazy DDR type of beats mixed in between. And I don't have many, if any of the songs unlocked. It has over 200 songs.
I just was bopping around the island, hitting power ups, and watching as the island began to grow before my eyes. I had no trouble hitting the beat. A small bar appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen and in DDR fashion, matches up with "tick marks" for each step. So you can watch the bar up top if you are rhythmically challenged like me lol. But after the first few steps, I found myself relying less and less on the bar. I kept the penalty for the missed steps turned on. I want the game to last me as long as possible, so making it as hard as possible will keep it so it takes me longer to unlock more goodies. I had no trouble though even with the penalty turned on. I really enjoy this game, and hope there will be sequels.
This game has been more motivating to me than anything I've come across so far. I look forward to unlocking new areas of the island, something that can't be done without walking to earn more points. I find myself sometimes walking up to 2 hours, and I haven't missed a day yet. The way it is set up, it will be difficult to ever find it boring. There are so many new items (songs, trees, houses, rainbow colors, cars, etc.) that become available depending on the time of day you are walking. In addition, I love that you are given a summary of the time you spent when you are done walking. You know how many steps, miles, and calories burned in addition to how many items you unlocked during your journey.
It's low impact exercise. My biggest complaint would be only that the game instructs to only lift up your heels... not quite picking up your foot all the way during your stepping. This has caused my toes to become numb. I find myself actually doing very small full steps when possible (something the game protests and reminds me not to do), but this is only possible during the slower songs anyway... otherwise, you would be literally jogging on the Wii board to keep up to the fast-paced songs.
I would recommend this to anyone who just needs more exercise. This sure doesn't seem like work! But I am burning calories that surely wouldn't come off without Walk it Out! I really hope they decide to make additional games with new worlds to explore. I'll be first in line to buy it.
Love this! I found out I don't have rhythm and I don't care. This is fun! The instructions are not clear, you walk and learn. My daughter who hates to walk got her own Walk It Out(she has her own place)and this has turned into a race. We hope they come out with a Walk It Out 2 with different areas to build. You don't get bored because there are different things to acquire to build your island.
Love it !!! Especially with my new Shape up sneakers. I find myself walking 2 or 3 times a day... at an hour a pop. My city/farm is growing by LEAPS and bounds. Not sure about the zodiac symbols or the orbs w/ the clocks in them. I click on them ALL the time but never seem to unlock anything, ever. Directions stink. Well, they really dont come with any. But if you like to walk... you'll love this game. 2 thumbs up
Your workout with "Walk It Out" can be as intense or leisurely as you want it. It's an adventure traveling around the island and "opening" up everything. Very good deal for the money!
This game is so much fun. It is like you stepped into a video game. You do not realize how much exercising you are doing. This game is a keeper!
