For the past week I just have not been able to put this game down. This is by far the best RPG the Playstation 3 has to offer at the moment.
-Online?Story Mode?-
It's a unique hybrid of online play and a story driven single player campaign. Now the character you create doesn't have a part in the story, but will be the character you use online to help the single player experience by obtaining various materials and gold to create armor, weapons, items, etc..
-Why can't I be the main character!?-
Some people have a problem with the fact that the character you create has nothing to do with the story. Understand that the story was never intended to revolve around that character. This was something added in to make the game experience longer and also give you the opportunity to play with your friends.
-Online Play-
The Online portion(Geonet) is very impressive. You can build your own town that people can meet up and play together at, post on the Geonet's message boards, send messages via "B-mail" to other friends and companions within Geonet, and much more. The town you build is called a "Georama" and in this Georama you can recruit townspeople within the single player campaign to work at your Georama. The jobs are farmer, mage, warrior, miner, and chef. Each job specializes in bringing in certain materials that can be sold at your shop. After you complete a quest in a Georama, you can harvest materials in that Georama by talking to the NPCs working there and going up to an object some of the NPCs are working with.
-Story (NO Spoilers)-
As far as the story goes a lot of reviewers have treated it as a WHOLE story. Well if it was a whole story it would suck, but this is actually PART of a story. The title "White Knight CHRONICLES" makes that fairly obvious. Looking at this as some people have seen the Lord of The Rings trilogy, they usually hated the endings. Why? Because they were not really endings. White Knight Chronicles is a trilogy and a lot of questions from the first were left unanswered. The story may seem cliche and bland, but there is much more going on(maybe most reviewers just weren't paying attention?). The pacing of this game is great and for being only a part of a story, I am very impressed and cannot wait for the second one(which has already been announced).
And because people seem to have some strange obsession with numbers I am not going to give any. I'm just saying what I know and love about the game. I've played through the entire story and am on my second cycle, I've poured hours into the multiplayer with friends, and I'm not getting paid to say this is a bad game. If you are a jrpg fan this is a must have.
After reading the mixed reviews White Knight received, I was a little worried about taking the $60 plunge. After playing for well over 5 hours, I can see that I made an excellent decision. I think the critical reception of WKC is mainly due to it's release window. WKC is sandwiched right smack in the middle of of the critics darling's Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII. As a result I don't think they gave the game a fair chance. Admittedly WKC isn't a perfect game, but it is however an incredibly solid RPG. And the editions of online quests, online town building, and a whole online social community, push WKC head and shoulders above most RPGs out there.
For anyone is is familiar with Final Fantasy XI or XII, you'll feel right at home with WKC. The battle system is a real time system, but still has a very turn based feel to it. Before attacking you have to wait until your attack gauge fills, after that you can select from a huge amount of different attacks. As you progress in the game, you can unlock new skills and attacks. You can even create your own combos. You can even name your created combos which is a neat little touch.
After you progress to a certain point in the story, you unlock the ability to call a giant meck to aid you in battle. You need to have a certain amount of action chips in order to call the Knight. Action chips are hard to come by, so you'll want to save the knight for tough battles. This ensures that the combat stays balanced. You can't expect to call the knight for every battle, but he'll be there to aid you when it's necessary.
WKC's environments are HUGE. In addition to the massive size, they are visually stunning. The worlds are rendered in great detail and vivid colors. The games graphics really help to make the world feel alive and make the environments a pleasure to explore.
Admittedly, the game's story is fairly typical for a Japanese RPG. By no means is this a bad thing though. The games young inexperienced hero, unlocks the power to save a princess and unite a torn kingdom. It may not be the most original story, but it's actually much better than it might sound. The characters are surprisingly likable and the story moves at a good pace.
What truly sets WKC apart is it's online modes. You can embark on guild quests with up to 4 players online. Quests rang from simple gathering missions to killing massive monsters. It's a blast! The items and XP earned online are transferred back to the single player game. The environments are recycled from the single player game, but the different missions and the ability to play with other people, keep it feeling fresh and exciting.
But wait, the online modes don't end there! In addition to the quests, there is also a town building feature called Georoma. You can create your own town, complete with shops. Your town acts as a hub for players to gather before quests. Visitors can actually shop at your stores and buy items. It's an incredibly original concept and it adds a whole other layer to the online component.
But wait there's more! The game features it's own social network called Geonet. Players can post blogs and pictures and comment on other players profiles. I haven't seen this in a game before. It's incredibly original and helps to add to the already incredible experience.
Pros:
-Beautiful worlds
-great battle system
-long single player game
-online quests and town building
-online social network
Cons:
-The lip syncing is a little off
-the story isn't very original
It may not be a perfect game, but it's easily one of the best RPGs this gen. I highly recommend it to everyone who likes RPGs, MMOs, or Final Fantasy. Don't let this game pass you by. You'll be missing out on something special if you do.
Its a very fun game to play..u get to build your own town..the graphics are great, the gameplay is pretty simple but some of the quest are hard...they would be easier if P3 was connected to the internet, but so far we have enjoyed this alot..WM
when I first got this game and started playing it I thought this game was going to be cool, the graphics are awsome, the characters are cool, the story is even cool. what makes this game a let down for me is the combat system and alot of the same enemies throughout the long and boring areas. To me this game plays like FF12 except the fact you can combine skills to create combos which you might hardly ever use because of the action blocks you try to save for transforming into the white night. The skill set up would be cool if each character had there own signiture moves, instead each character can learn the same skills as everybody else. There are very few treasure chests to find in the game and half the time there not worth getting because they might hold a lowsy healing herb or some peace of armor or weapon you already have, so don't expect alot of hunting around for riches. Not a whole lot in variety of armor or weopons either,as every character can equip all the same stuff so once again no special outfits for different characters. Oh and the lamest part of the game is the mute avatar you create at the start of the game, useless! There are plenty of sidequests which you can only tackel with your avatar and you really cant do them alone so you team up with people online to make them easier.White Night Chronicals isn't a bad game some might like some wont, I wish I waited until the price dropped before I got it.
This game was sort of a fluke buy. I watched the trailers, and I was really all for it, but as the reviews started coming out, I started becoming more and more skeptical. This is not like me, because I'm the last person who will base my purchase of a game on a review (does that make me a hypocrite for reviewing games for others?).
Anyways, WKC is your typical 'save the princess' storyline. You've got your heroes, allies, enemies, etc. If you're a gamer, you're familiar with all of these aspects, so I'm not going to delve into them too much. There are a few things that stand out in this game, both positively and negatively, which I will emphasize on.
First, your senses. This game is auditorially (made up word?) a very appealing game. All of the music is very fitting, and really gives you a good feel of where you're at, what's going on, and so on. I didn't really pay attention to who composed the music, but they definitely deserve some credit for coming up with an epic track. There are many different instruments used in each song, and if this game had an OST, I would recommend all game music listeners to purchase it. It definitely completes the project, that's for sure. One thing I noticed about it too is that none of it seems repetitive. In fact, you almost don't notice it's there unless you try hard enough to listen. That's just how good it is.
Also, the graphics in this game are beyond breathtaking. Granted, I played the majority of this game on my 19" 1080i Asus monitor, but still. Sometimes it really blows me away just how much the PS3 can do. The environments are expansive, the towns seem alive (similar to FFXII), and you really have to sometimes just drop the camera low to suck in all of the surroundings. I feel if you don't take in some of the sights (and use the Crystal Camera) then you are not truly experiencing this game.
The third was the battle system, and the primary reason this game lost a lot of points with me. You are able to free roam the environment, and pick and choose your battles as you see fit. This was great, because nowadays, I don't have time to wait as I get into a battle of a traditional RPG anymore, go through the battle, then item and experience distribution, then back to the field, only to get into another battle three steps later. Action RPG's have slowly grown on me over the years, and I have a feeling it'll be like that for a while. However, the way the system is set up feels clunky. Original, but clunky.
You set your attacks up based on the weapon you are carrying. For example, the basic attack of a shortsword is slash. If you change your weapon, and forget to change your attack tray, then you are stuck with no attacks. When you engage an enemy, a ring pops up with the name of the attack you're currently ready to use. When the ring fills, you can press X to initiate the attack, and the ring empties for it to be filled again. This ring fill speed is based on the equipment you have on your player. If you wear clunky, heavy armor, the ring fills anywhere from 6-8 seconds. If you wear light knit armor (or roll nude, which I needed to do a few times), the ring can fill as fast as 1.5 to 2 seconds. So in a sense, you still feel like you're trapped within a traditional RPG waiting for your ATB gauge to fill or something, and it's ugly on the screen. I understand their concern for making a button masher, but I can think of a few different ways this could have been handled. Then again, I'm not a game programmer, so who am I to say?
One of the biggest complaints that I saw in most reviews was the lip syncing and yes I agree, it is really badly done. The storyline is pretty cheesy as well, so it only adds to it. The one saving grace that it does have is that come midway through the story, it stops being cheesy and becomes much more drama filled, giving you much information about the characters you're with, their backgrounds, and why they are where they are. It does get good if you can bear with it, even to the point you almost forget how bad the voice acting is.
The game is relatively simple, and if you didn't horse around like I did, you can get through it in a few short hours. There is a few things to do outside of the main game, such as going on line and playing with peers (which is a lot of fun) or messing around with your Georama, but the game is pretty cut and dry. All of the trophies are hidden though, so be prepared to do a lot of playing to figure out what they are.
Overall, I don't regret buying the game, I just think there were some issues they could have (and should have) worked on before a release. I am just hoping WKC2 will address these issues. Oh, and the ending is totally worth playing through the game, if nothing more.
(I'm only a few hours in to the game as I type this, right after meeting the Don in Albana and unlocking the binding shops.)
IGN, GameSpot, and the other websites and magazines that gave this game crappy reviews should really pop the disc back in and give it another go! DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Honestly opinion =/= fact, and if the game appeals to you by all means pick it up, it's worth it in my opinion! The art direction is a little weird but slowly growing on me. It "looks" like a PS2 game, but honestly if you take the time to look around it is most def a PS3 game! Graphics are very crisp and clean and the animation is pretty well done too. The only problem are the lip syncs, but then that's always been a universal problem with JRPGs. Music is alright, but it does fit the theme and the mood of the scenes. Combat and character customizations are awesome and VERY in depth! But by far my favorite aspect of the game is GeoNet/GeoRama! Being able to play quests with up to four people is fun, and the community has been VERY friendly and helpful so far (besides a few bad apples on the in game message boards that got steamrolled over by everyone else!).
If I had to put it in to a few words, White Knight Chronicles is the best of Final Fantasy XII, Dark Cloud 2, Monster Hunter, and Final Fantasy XI all rolled up in to one!
Now, I must get back to my HomeTown...
I was hoping for a very fun game. It's ok. I get so tired of completing a battle to have the same cut scene or whatever you call it right after the battle to come up having the characters saying the same thing over and over and over again. Other than that the game is pretty cool. Graphics are OK again. If I were to do this again I would wait a good year before buying this one. Much cheaper. However being a new game junkie I buy them on launch day.
So I've been hearing about other reviews for this game and how it's been averaging fairly low (5-6 out of 10) with "professional" game reviewers. Remember, folks, the word "professional" just means that someone is paid to do something...not that they are necessarily good at it.
First and foremost, realize a title like WKC isn't hyped enough for the publisher to bribe video game review websites for a decent review (unlike Grand Theft Auto IV or Modern Warfare 2). Also...if you think IGN or Gamespot or any other review website isn't "bribed" in some way to ignore or make light of a highly hyped game's sucky spots then I want some of the kool-aid you're drinking so that I can ride home on the mothership with you.
With that being said, let's get down to the game.
The Good:
Graphics - The latest consoles have pretty much spoiled us. We expect greatness and beauty and this game delivers. The characters are very detailed and the environments are rich and colorful. I am still amazed at how well the latest games can capture the look of water. The devil is in the details and WKC delivers very well.
Sound - The voice acting is about par for a decent JRPG. There are some seriously corny parts but if you enjoy Japanese RPGs and anime then everything will mesh perfectly. The music is very lovely and flows right along with the game. It manages to fade into the background for a pleasant "white noise" effect as should the music in any RPG. Those of you reading this review that cut your teeth on the 8-bit classics of Zelda and Final Fantasy will most likely already have the ability to filter out repetitive gameplay music. Fortunately for WKC, the music is infinitely better than a tune that can be accurately demonstrated on a xylophone and I find myself listening to it frequently without wishing I could scoop my eardrums out and throw them down a garbage disposal.
Gameplay - Turn based RPG with a twist. I really enjoy building my own fighting combos from the base list of acquired moves. If a certain move becomes boring you are able to change it up a bit. Not to mention that if a certain enemy winds up really pissing you off that you can (minus banging your hands together to form a sword) transform into Voltron and beat the ever loving crap out of it. Transforming Leonard into the White Knight is great once he's fully transformed. Suddenly you're not so scary any more are you, you piece of troll arse!
The Bad:
With the exception of Chrono Trigger, EVERY game has at least one sucky spot in it somewhere...and WKC is no exception.
Graphics - The game is stunning. Seriously. However, I find myself wishing for a bit more detail on the monsters. Why am I fighting little evil beavers and venus flytraps on crack? That was seriously the most creative thing they could come up with? The trolls are cool looking as well as the Magi knights...but when I get up close they seem like they should be fighting Gumby. It's like every effort was made to avoid enemies with faces and detail. The plants are just a green sideways pac-man, the little evil beavers are wearing Klan masks, the troll is all nose, and the knights all have on helmets. I imagine this was to save time so that it could be spent on the main heroes and villians...but at the end of the day I feel like the hero should be wearing a big Jack-in-the-Box head. Also...what is with the "Avatar"? I custom made my avatar and spent a lot of time on him and when I'm done he looks like a damn nutcracker compared to Leonard. I even put a mole under one of his eyes and he STILL looks like friggen Pinnoccio! The only good thing about the custom character is that I can give him the same eyes that Cartman from South Park had when he was trying to fart out a satellite that aliens had stuffed up his anus.
Sound - There is one certain character that I already want to go back and lead into an ambush so that he dies. Why is it in EVERY game the character with the biggest ears (Batman excluded) has the most annoying voice EVER? The little rabbit creatures make me want to drop-kick baby otters. While running around the characters in your party will sometimes just spout out random crap. THE SAME RANDOM CRAP OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I would even be fine if they made fun of me, "Damn it...this guy keeps running us into every freaking enemy on the map!" or "Wrong way, a**h***!" No...I have to hear about "That dark knight...he was formidable." Or something along those lines. That's the ONLY good thing about the Avatar character...he has no voice of his own because he's supposed to be YOU. Ugh...
Gameplay - I hate multiplayer on any game. HATE it. If I wanted to play an online "RPG" I'd go play with the little foul mouthed jerks on WoW that haven't hit puberty yet. So...I make my Avatar and then he's introduced to the main character as "the new guy". He has NO voice of his own and just makes facial expressions and grunts. Basically...he's the RPG version of Beaker from the Muppets. He even makes the jaw drop face. I kept waiting for him to get electrocuted and for his eyeballs to light up. All we're missing is for the Swedish Chef to start throwing dead chickens around screaming "UM GESH DE BORK BORK!" That being said I cannot comment on the multiplayer (I'll leave that to other reviewers) but am thouroughly enjoying the single player now that I have enough other characters to stuff the stupid self-made avatar out of sight.
Future reference for game makers: SEPARATE THE MULTIPLAYER!!!! If I want to play multiplayer then let me make a multiplayer character or make the multiplayer character grow along with Leonard but keep him out of sight. The idea of the "Avatar" is completely freaking stupid. It's like I have this mute squire following me around waiting for me to tell him to shine my boots and drops his jaw straight down every time something dramatic happens. Remember the chancellor from Chrono Trigger? Yeah, the Avatar makes a face just like that but in today's graphics.
The battle elements have a few...quirks. The "Wait Meter" that is present in most turn-based RPGs is annoying as hell. It's a huge obtrusive circle that disappears if an enemy steps out of range so that you have to reset the damn thing every time it closes. Not to mention that you transform back into boring old Leonard if you're Voltron and kick the crap out of something and there are no more enemies around. What the hell is that? What if I wanted to run over to another troll a few screens away after I finish using up ALL of my Action Coins on becoming Voltron? I then have to go and get smacked in the face by KKK Beavers and green sideways Pac-Mans or score a bunch of hits to build back up my action coins.
Also...why the hell does it take so long to become The White Knight? I know Voltron took forever to transform but that was stupid too. If I were the badguy in Voltron I'd run up and start kicking the stupid right out of Voltron while his ass was trying to transform. Well...in THIS game the badguys figured the same thing. While I'm reciting the entire latin phrase found on the side of a pack of cigarettes and the bottom of three different brands of beer the badguys are beating the ever loving poo out of my face.
Also...for being an invention of the Ancients and having ultimate power the White Knight is slow as hell. I have to wind up like I'm getting ready to tee off on a lobbed baseball and then all of my moves look the same. Why the hell does Voltron have to be so damn slow? Grab that sword in two hands if you have to and CHOP THE BADGUY!!!
Leveling up is also nice...but I can't tell what the hell I'm going to unlock after I choose a skill. This is stupid, in my opinion. I should be able to see what the progress will be of learning a certain move and if I deem it as useless then I can move on to the next training topic.
I'll end here and say that, all-in-all, this is a great Japanese RPG. If you do not like JRPGs, however, you will not like this game...and just like the professional review sites you had no business playing this game in the first place.
I've only had this game for a day so far but I played it for hours. Now if you want to read all those review on the other sites you're gonna think I'm mad. I'll tell you right now, some of those critics aren't particularly loving the game. Their complaints about it however are ridiculous. If it was THAT bad a game then I wouldn't have so many people playing it nonstop out of my friendslist of 100 people.
I enjoyed FFXII in some ways and in many I disliked it. The battle system was pretty good, the environments were detailed. I just had a great dislike of the story. It was just very... confusing. The characters weren't all that great either. And that's what people are saying about WKC. Only difference is those same people loved FF12.
WKC basic premise is that the main character Leonard is a typical working class guy. He has a run in with Princess Cisna and in an attempt to rescue her, he gains the ability to summon a white knight to aid him in battle. The story may have been done before but for me I'm just glad it makes sense. But I think my favorite thing about this game has to be the online. Building my own town then letting others come to it. There are a lot of people playing online too. I opened my town earlier and all of a sudden it was full. So full in fact I had to make another room in my hometown to invite my friends to. It may sound bad but there is the option to password each room you make in your town. The rooms are basically lobbies which can hold 12 people and groups of 4 can go on quests together. It really gives the game it's MMO feel. While FF12 felt like an MMO, WKC really expands on that. You can actually take the fun online with your friends and even people you don't know.
Honestly if you're iffy on the game after all the reviews then you should rent it. I could go on and on about all of the awesome things in the game but most of it can be discovered in other reviews and previews of the game. It typically gets it's low rating cause of the single player. So if you're not intending to play this title online rent it. If you're unsure and want to play it online, rent it. But I can say that this game was worth the price with all the content in it.
Do not pay attention to reviews unless you dont like JRPGS. The same people that told us Valkyria Chronicles
is an 8.8, BrĂ¼tal Legend is an 8.4, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 an 8.0, hell they gave Wolfenstein a 7.8.
This is good game that is almost a MMORPG. The multiplayer part is one of the best features, love the cut scenes and the choices you get to make to your character.
IGN to give it a much lower score than Watchmen: The End is Nigh -- Part 1, which was a button mashing bore, which they gave a 7.1 shows how silly their rating is.
This is one game I have waited for, and I am mostly a PC Gamer. Most of what is in the game is so,ething you have to experience. It involves some strategy unless you like to die easily and see the game over screen.
If the combat was too boring for the reviewer what did you expect? I have been video gaming for over 30 years, yes thats thirty years + lol
see if anyone remembers Crush Crumble and Chomp lol thats from Epyx, Inc 1981
I don't see how you can finish this in 30 hours unless you have no life lol, and dont do any intercation with anyone or any of the quests.
I was not disapointed in my purchase, and I rarely pay $55 for a PS3 game.
Media reviews sux, this games its the best jrpg in the PS3 to date. Beautiful enviroments, big towns, great music. If u want a great rpg please buy this u wont regret, this game deseves at least 9/10, remenber this comes from the creators of Dragon Quest VIII, Drangon Quest IX, Rogue Galaxy, Dalk Cloud, Dark Clod 2, Profesor Layton, etc... Dont miss the oportunity to loss all the credibility in the media reviews!!!
while a great many people have reviewed this and gave it rather luke warm reviews I find it to be a gem.
it's nothing new nor groundbreaking nor will you find those amazing graphics shown in all the E3 trailers.
pushing all that aside, it's fun and you can play with up to FOUR friends ONLINE! that's a big draw for me since Most RPGs don't have ANY online at all. the graphics are about the norm for a JRPG (japanese Role Playing Game) as is the dialogue (also the lip movements are very much like the old Kung Fu films lol)
again though it's a blast. it has an MMO feel all the way through the game. the townsfolk go about their buisness having various conversations and also like dragon age (though not nearly as deep nor Mature since it's a Teen Title) many long dialogue sequences that help the rather cliche story to move forward. it feels open world but gently guides you (in linear fashion) towards your next destination. battle consists of setting party A.I. which is surprisingly Excellent! they heal you and themselves right when necessary, fight well and act as a true team without you having to micromanage every little detail of each character(Like DAO)
some of the monsters are HUGE in true MMO style and have various weak points and weaknesses (such as weak to fire and exposed knees)
make big monsters FUN to fight! it's rare you'll die your companions are so well tuned. loads of loot collecting and crafting.
then the georama system from dark cloud returns but this time it's online so your friends can come visit your town and resupply depending how you built your village.
if you build geared towards weapon crafting you'll have Great weapons for sale but little in the way of potions food etc.
if you go armor it becomes little weapons food etc. so you either must find a balance or the flavor you like most.
the game is not perfect but it's darn good.
I'd recommend it to any FF fans or to JRPG lovers cause there's loads to do here with a whopping FIFTY Online multiplayer Quests
and more coming in the way of DLC. this game will keep you occupied for weeks. and it's worth it since a "certain Trophy" Unlocks a White Knight Home armor Costume! also a white knight HUGE statue!
is it worth it? you decide.
my biggest gripe is Your character (thankfully your not the cliche' main character just the Mute Sidekick) really has no bearing on anything in the story and my other gripe is no White Knight transformations in the Online Multiplayer since your using YOUR avatar Not Leonard the main Character from the single player (Hence no transformations) which makes it feel even more like an MMO playing Online.
Graphics: good but not great. 4 stars
Sound: great in some scenes mundain in battle 4 stars
Gameplay: loads of combos, spells, weapons armor and loot, and FULL avatar customization I really want to go 5 stars here but I can't. 4 Stars due to many of the gameplay elements being recycles elements from other games and not being new and innovative.
Fun: 5 stars! the game's a blast, easy to get into and a great game for casual and Hardcore RPG fans. Plus 4 Player Online!!!!
Overall: not perfect but DEFINATELY orth a rental at first to see if it's your "cup of tea". a solid Four Star Title
(PS3 Review)
Buy White Knight Chronicles Here!
White Knight Chronicles International Edition
People have been asking for good rpgs on the ps3 for awhile now and WKC is an awesome addition to the PS3. Its got a pretty good single player but the multiplayer is a blast. I played multiplayer with a friend for close to 2 hours on our first time on it. Its a great game and you shouldn't hesitate to buy it if you've seen those critics reviews. Its a breath of fresh air into the PS3 library so go out there and get it.
The single player mode is mediocre but the online quests are really fun. It feels like a new game when playing online.
White Knight Chronicles is one game that has been set up with a story that can get you hooked while at the same time having an online that is self indulging. The storyline for White Knight is amazingly well developed. The online is so close to feeling like Monster Hunter but keeping to it's own style. With a custom avatar it's really rare and hard to find 2 players with exact copies.
