I just got this PS3 recently and only have two games so far. I think it works great and can't wait to try some blue-ray discs on it.
This PS3 is the best one yet!
I have owned the Original PS3 60gb and at least one of every new PS3 version. Only one of them ever broke down on me (PS3 40gb in 2007) and Sony replaced it promptly. But by far this one is the most compact, energy efficient, power packing PS3 of them all. I do miss the additional USB ports and SD card reader from the 60gb PS3. I never used the Linx capabilities although I did install it a few times... Nor really played the PS2 games on the PS3 (Did that on the original PS3 and it had lines all over the place...they fixed those issues but PS2 game play on the PS3 was like trying to go back into time.)
I am in the group of buyers that was in the market for a blu-ray player and decided on this based on bang for the buck. My criteria were:
1) blu ray player
2) built in wi-fi
3) netflix capable
The closest competitor of comparable quality was the LG 390, which was $260 at the time of this review. For only forty bux more, I got a media center, game console and one less remote (I have a Sony Bravia TV). Everyone has their opinion about the game selection from the fanboys to casual gamers. Consider me the latter. I like that since the ps3 has been out a while, you can find some good titles for $20 to $30. I was really into Battlefield 1942 a while back on PC so I decided to get Battlefield Bad Company for only $20! If I get hooked, I may have to shell out $50 - $60 for BC 2 coming out soon.
I know most have to get a separate remote to operate the ps3, but given the Bravia Sync capabilities, I was able to operate it with my Bravia remote. I have the 46z4100 and it worked like a charm! You just have to enable HDMI control in the ps3 settings and it will work great! You can even navigate most of the menu with it except for maybe internet and some options where you need "x" and "o" buttons. I am still exploring other buttons on the remote to see what relates to all the Dualshock controller buttons, but it appears to be limited to the center navigation for ps3 control and the the blu-ray works with the DVD button controls.
Another great function is the media center functions. I connected to my router easily and after a little tinkering, I was able to allow the ps3 to see all my media on my PC. It wasn't crystal clear how to set it up since most tutorials are for WM11 and WM12 was included with Windows 7. For WM11 I think you can actually select the ps3 to allow access, but in WM12, next to the Organize button, I selected Stream > Automatically Allow Devices to Play My Media... and then it worked. When loading folders in the ps3, it may take some time to get the folders to show up if you have a large collection. I thought it wasn't working since there is no progress bar or anything but they eventually showed up. This is probably dependent on the speed of your network as well.
Speaking of networks, that is probably my only negative... The ps3 has 802.11 b/g built in, while the LG 390 had "n". To get full advantage of Netflix, I wish it had "n". One other minor drawback is you have to put in the Netflix disc to get streaming to work. I read that it uses BD live to stream the content. Apparently Microsoft has a deal with Netflix to be exclusive on offering the software built in on XBOX and the agreement expires in late 2010. I'm glad Sony found a work around but hope they update the firmware after the agreement expires.
Overall, I think its a great deal and if you can get in on a nice bundle, then it will sweeten the pot even more! I was a day late on getting a BF deal since I was still deciding what to do and missed out, but even at full price I have no regrets!
This was purchased for my husband because his Xbox broke. He has been like a kid in a candy store. He is a bit of a self proclaimed geek and has networked the system to view media from all of our household systems. We have watched movies from all of our computers and Netflix, we are able to view pictures and videos from all of our computers, and we are able to listen to music from all of are household systems AND this doesn't even mention the actual games!
PS3 needs to work out their media search engine a bit more but all in all this gaming system is awesome.
I purchase this PS3 before lunch, I get it on expected date. The console is really quite respect to my PS3 80GB. The size and weight is amazing, the design is nice.
It's a really redesign of the console with the same performance. Also is more cooler.
Playstation 3 is the best gaming console on the market. It tops all other gaming consoles by far. It has better games and better graphics and a can do hundreds of things. The xbox 360 is trash and they had a huge callback on there systems where as PS3 is better in quality. If you open the XBOX 360 is trash in comparison. Xbox 360 charges for internet and a hard drive, ps3 has it but in and the online gaming is free. PS3 has a built in wireless and ton of option to make the system fit your personality. It even allow you to change the operation system and install windows XP, now that cool. PS3 has built in blue ray so you can play blue ray movies. I purchased the first playstation 3 and came with backwards compatibility so I can play ps1, ps2, and ps3 games. And much more....
First, NO RED RING OF DEATH!!!! A HUGE PLUS.
The PS3 slim is much quieter than the original form factor PS3, it runs much cooler and has a sleeker design. With triple A titles like Uncharted 2 coming out October the 13th, this is the way to go for gamers who want a hassle free complete entertainment system with less than 10% hardware failure rate (Xbox360 after several years is still has over 40% failure rate).
PlayStation 3 120 GB
I opened it and it was exactly what I had paid for. As soon as I plugged it in and entered my info I was up and running. I do have one suggestion. Do not expect it to play Playstation 2 software. That was the only great feature that was removed from the PS3 Slim model.
Perfect Xmas present for my family!
Of course, I had to try it out to make sure
it works. I've been trying it out probably
way too much since I purchased Guitar Hero
World Tour more recently. I originally bought
PS3 for games for my son when he visits, and
because it had Blue-ray for my wife & I.
Turned into my new toy, & hard to put down.
Works great with our new LG HDTV!
Delivered promptly and way worth the money!
Highly recommended.
I just got the ps3 from FedEx today with Little Big Planet (game). Then I unbox it , wow I can tell that it's definitely lighter than the original ps3 , plus it's smaller too. The graphic is just amazing , sound quality isn't bad either. It's more quieter than my original ps3 and Blue ray playback is quiet as well .I Like this console very much!
The slim ps3 is GREAT. Have had it since it came out and I haven't had any problems with it.
First and far most, I finally decided to get the newest PS3 version to play great video games. A couple years ago with the high PS3 price and less great selection of games, I wouldn't think about getting PS3 yet. However now is a great time to get the latest version PS3 for the price, durability, more energy efficient (less heat should mean less chance of failure) and the great selection of video games out now. Here are just some of the great positives for the the newest PS3. 1. First time I used it, I was very happy to notice that it is so quiet. No loud fan or noise! I heard some older PS3 sounded too loud. This PS3 is good for watching movies without hearing noise in background. 2. My main reason to get PS3 was great selection of games such as Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Red Dead Redemption and the list goes on and on. And the prices for games are becoming very reasonable now. You don't have to pay $59.99. 3. It really is a great blu-ray and dvd player. It makes my regular DVDs look amazing. This is a big reason to get PS3 for its dvd and blu-ray capabilities. I will be buying a blu-ray remote though just for convenience. 4. It has built-in wifi, the internet and playstation network for free. 5. Put movies, pictures and videos on it but I really didn't even try that. 6. Stream netflix movies on it. Sure the netflix streaming selection is pretty bad but once in a while you can find some good movie on it. It is nice to have. Now, I will talk about the negatives. 1. I thought the internet would be better but the browser is set up weird with no website address on top (really?), slower and lot of sites have trouble showing up i guess to adobe flash as I tried to watch videos and the flash doesn't support this device. And because I don't like the internet on PS3 much, I won't waste money on a PS3 keyboard so I am stuck typing with a PS3 controller. Yes, it is annoying and difficult to type fast on a PS3 controller. Part of the reason why I can't even see myself having any decent conversation on Playstation Home. The Playstation Home simply isn't for me anyways but maybe it is for some other people. I would love to see the PS3 fix their browser to make it somewhat like a regular computer. I think the playstation store is nice to have but too expensive and small selection of movies. I will use the internet browser once in a while but don't think PS3 will replace your use of a laptop or pc. I still think internet as a "bonus" of the PS3 as I didn't get the PS3 because of the internet feature. I really got it for the great video games!
I am slowly growing into the HD world. I recently purchased an HD tv and later upgraded my cable service. Later I decided that I want to watch movies in HD. This then lead me to purchase the PS3.
I purchased this system to use as a Blu-player. This system provides a lot of features for a good price. In my research into purchasing a blu-ray player, I found that the PS3 has a lot of expansion opportunities such as Netflix, HDD, multimedia from PC, motion controllers, 3-D capability later this year and more. I felt that the 299.99 price was worth the extra $50 than the players around $250.00. The growth opportunities were the selling points for me.
This system has too many features to list. I found the Bravia Sync feature between my Sony tv and PS3 to be handy (saves me from having to purchase the PS3 Bluetooth remote). I am looking forward to networking the multimedia features with my PC. The system navigation is easier than what I was expecting so I think my wife will like that. The initial setup was extremely easy with the help of the screen prompts.
So far I only have a few complaints. This system has no support for the PS2 games. It would have been great to get rid of my PS2. The other complaint is the difficulty of using the Bravia Sync. I do not find it easy to use, maybe because I am not familiar with it yet. Sony should do better integration of devices like these.
I am looking forward to watching Blu-ray movies on this system once I complete my reorganization of my A/V equipment. I can then dive further into the features of this system.
I previously had a PlayStation 3 40GB. However, it was on its last leg. Therefore, I decided to take advantage of GameStop's PS3 trade-in offer for this newer version. There are a few new features when comparing both systems.
Size comparison:
The slim is a lot smaller (7.05lbs.) than the fat PS3, which is 11lbs. Overall, the slim is 33% lighter than the fat PS3.
Console design comparison:
I actually like the new design of the slim. The body is not shiny or as fancy as the fat PS3. The texture would be similar to the finish of a counter top. The finish seems scratch resistant, as well. At least, it is not a dust magnetic and scratch haven as the fat PS3. The slim still has some shiny parts on the console, where the buttons are located. This part has a mirror-like finish, which is slightly different than the fat PS3's finish. Your reflection can be seen. That is the best way to describe it. In addition, both sides of the console has the same shiny finish ala the PS3 fat.
Speaking of the buttons, some people do not like them because they are physical buttons, unlike the touch-sensitive buttons of the PS3 fat. I believe the slim's buttons are better because I do not have to worry about fingerprints, while pressing the buttons. In addition, the buttons no longer have to be held down to turn the system on or off. Just press the button, and the console turns on. The same happens when powering the console off. The power and eject buttons illuminate, as well. Therefore, players do not have to try finding the buttons, if they decide to turn it off in the dark. Of course, the controller can be used, as well.
One of the most important new features is the quietness of the slim's fan. It is a lot more quiet than the fat PS3's fan. In fact, I have to get up close to the machine to hear it. That is a great thing. I can now play and not have to worry about that loud fan, which used to annoy me, while I used to play my fat PS3. The slim is more energy efficient and uses less power than the fat PS3. This could reduce the strain on this system, which could lead to issues from long term use, such as the YLOD. The HDD is easily accessible, now. It is directly underneath the power and eject buttons. Now, players can upgrade the HDD, without voiding the warranty. Of course, if players had a 40GB PS3, they can probably live with the 120GB HDD, which comes with the slim. That is a 80GB upgrade.
Console set-up:
Setting up the system could not be more easier. In fact, if you already have a router, just flash through the options, which ask about your internet set up. Of course, I have a wired router. Therefore, it might be a little different for wireless router owners. During set-up, players will be prompted to create a new PSN ID or use the previous one. If players are worried about transferring data, such as games saves, music or pictures from one PS3 to another, no problem. If you still have your old PS3, plug the ethernet cable to each console. For those, who have data saved to a flash drive, just plug it into the slim, and copy the data. It is that easy.
In case of a possible YLOD or other issue, I would recommend having a flash drive, and saving your data. Who wants to lose game saves, pictures, and music? If you have downloading demos, add-ons, and full games, do not worry! For players with an existing PSN ID, just re-download the demos, add-ons or full games. Of course, you will not be re-charged for the re-downloading of your add-ons or full game purchases because they were already purchased via PSN account.
The verdict:
Outside of what was mentioned, there are no other new features. However, if gamers are thinking about switching to PS3, the slim is a good way to start. For those looking to just switch from a fat PS3, I would not recommend it, unless you feel like it is necessary. Either way, this system is worth owning.
I bought this 120Gb Slim PS3 simply for the fact my old 80Gb PS3 died after updating to the latest firmware from Sony. It lasted me 3 years and as much as I used it in the past year I say it served me well although I still blame Sony for killing it...R.I.P. old 80 Gigger.
So on to my thoughts of the 120Gb Slim, Nothing really different as far as playing PS3 games and watching Blu-Ray movies. All are the same as the old PS3 models EXCEPT the Slims do not have 4 USB ports in the front for accessories as some of the older PS3 models did. This is no real big deal cause you can use a USB hub to get additional ports.
The Slims do not support backwards compatibility for PS2 games but says it will play SOME PS(one) original games. This is no big deal for me either, I did not have any PS2 games to play except one. As expected though, if you want to play some PS2 games you may be able to find them on the Playstation Store to buy(you know Sony has to keep making money somehow).
Last thing I can think of at this time the new Slims do not offer is the option in the XMB to add another operating system such as Linux Yellow Dog. Also not a big deal to me cause I have other computers in the house I can use instead of the PS3 as most normal people do. Really, what is the purpose for another operating system, not like you can do a lot on the PS3 with another operating system. I bought my PS3 to play games and watch movies. It is not intended for me to take place of an actual computer... IT IS A GAMING CONSOLE.
So bottom line is I like the 120Gb Slim, I wanted the larger hard drive but I can buy a larger hard drive at a later time and install it myself. It is quieter than my old PS3, plays games and movies the same as the older PS3 did too. I also like the matte finish, the whole look is more pleasant on the eyes than the old PHAT PS3. My whole family loves watching Blu-ray movies on it as well as instantly streaming movies from Netflix.
My only big concern is this, IF Sony killed my old PS3 with a firmware update that caused the Blu-ray drive to only be able to read regular DVD's and Cd's and not Blu-ray movies or games(all PS3 games are on Blu-ray BTW) then will they end up coming out with a newer design for the PS3 again and releasing an update to kill the current Slims?? I do think that Sony deliberately did this to get people to buy the newer Slims.
