Me and my 8 and 12 year old have been playing the MX vs. ATV series and have enjoyed them all. We ordered despite the bad user reviews and can happily say that it EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS by a large margin. By far the best MX game to date. Game play is awesome, the tracks are great (sand tracks are AWESOME with the deformation) and the graphics are really well done.
WORD OF CAUTION - It takes a while to get used to the new rider Reflex. Don't get frustrated, just keep riding. When we first got it, I got frustrated and went back to Untamed and very quickly realized just how much BETTER the Reflex controls are and the game in general terms. Plan on getting out of shape occasionally; use the reflex rarely and ease in small amounts as you begin to feel comfortable. The new rider Reflex really adds depth of skill and is the best advancement for this series.
One negative point that should be changed - the bot riders take you out far too often and in outright crazy ways (e.g. across the rider's paths at the gate drop, etc.) at times. Crash simulations could have been made more realistic and gets outright annoying at times. Rainbow... hope to see an update soon!
Anyone who enjoys Motocross or have enjoyed MX vs. ATV in the past will LOVE this game once adjusted to the reflex controls. Great update Rainbow... thanks!!!
The Graphics, The Gameplay is outstanding. If you arnt Good at racing games this might not be for you. Dont let the bad review tell you anything, I really think it is alot of fun, one of the Funniest acually but opinions are opinions :), rent it first see if you like it..
It required a little "get used to it first" - When I first try it, specially for the ATV's the control was too sensitive and I could not make 100 meters without flipping over, but after a few days I got used to it and now it is the only game I play. controlling the MX is more easy and a little more fun because of the diversity of freestyle.
The game is really fun and the graphics awesome, I really do not understand the bad ratings that I am reading on amazon because the game worth the $50 I paid when it just came out.
I would definitely recommend this to any MX. ATV or Buggy riders, you will enjoy it.
Do not only refer to the rating here, go and try it to your nearest game store and see for your self.

This was the greatest gift I gave this year! My husband has really enjoyed it. Loves the graphics and how realistic it is. Way better than the game before this one!
I have pretty much went through this entire game except the Freestyle levels(Dont really get into the tricks) & this game is fun, fun, fun. I have seen other reviewers bash this game, but I attribute this to them not having the patience, nor the hand eye coordination to play it. I am a off roader in real life & this game has very realistic controls. YOU HAVE TOTAL CONTROL over the Motorcycle/ATV you are riding. Anyone that has basic skills of riding a dirtbike or ATV can see that the techniques used in this game are true to life.
High speed cornering, body positioning during jumps, going up steep hills with weight leaned toward the front of the bike, etc. Its all here. What really impressed me is how the designers made it real by giving you the ability to bring your rear end down while in mid jump by giving throttle, & by bringing your front end down by applying the brake.. These are REAL techniques.. The tracks are realistic because the terrain gets rutted up just like in real life as a race progresses. Riding in ruts is a real technique.
The free ride levels have challenges that are really cool. I personally like the hill climbing challenges because this is something that I enjoy in real life. You have to use the same real life techniques used in trail riding for climbing hills. I also love how you can actually go out & purchase after market upgrades for your MX/ATV & they are the real parts. Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, KTM is all here. Thing is KTM seems to be the only one that had copyrights with the game designers because the name of the other bikes are different. Example, there is a yellow Takashi 250 two stroke dirtbike which is a Suzuki RM 250 two stroke. I own this one IRL & I was able to build my bike that I have down to the black Excel rims with the Kenda Carlsbad tires. LOL the knobbies on tire profile even match.. You can tune your bike(suspension, braking, traction, acceleration) just like in real life so that you can have all your power on the bottom end for mx tracks where you need rapid acceleration. Or you can tune your bike for top end for the longer Omnicross races. The gear, helmets, & goggles are even true to real life. The designers did their homework on this one.
My only complaints is the AI of the other riders in the game. What is not realistic is how they designers make other riders intentionally wreck you & themselves. Its a bit overkill & very annoying. Especially on the Omnicross races where the trucks will run you over on purpose. Of course, the thing to do is to lay back when attempting to pass & wait them to make a mistake so you can overtake them for a higher position. This game has excellent replay value because I have already won all of the races, I just like going back through them again for the fun of it LOL.
I only wish that they had more tracks than the 3 levels on the game. Maybe they can add more later as purchased add ons on the Playstation Network?
I reccomend this game to anyone that like to be challenged with a real life riding experience.
I bought this video game as a gift for my grandson and i'm glad i did because he and his friends really love it.
My son enjoys playing this game. It is a bit tough to get the hang of and unlock tracks, but he still enjoys it. The lean controls are hard to get used to, but do make the handling realistic.
Overall, this is a great game. The riding dynamics are nice, and the whips and scrubs never get old. From the motorcycle feel, I'd say this is the best in the MX vs. ATV series. I'm still not a fan of the Waypoint, Freeride and non-motorcycle parts of the game, but guess they are trying to hit a larger audience.
I do wish they had a 'career' option for the true MX fans. One where you could start as an amateur and work your way up to the big leagues. Then race a full MX and SX series, where points are tallied for the whole series, and not just a single race. But maybe I'm dreaming. :)
If it had the career option above, this would definitely get 5 stars from me. My only other complaint is that the soundtrack is a little on the heavy side, without many options. No complaints about the graphics, however.
To sum it up, if you're a racing fan (doesn't matter which kind), you won't be disappointed with this game.
I started playing rainbow studios games since Motocross Madness and then Motocross Madness 2. I feel after that it kind of went down hill. I had high hopes for Reflex and I was happy with what I got. The controls are great and the dynamic terrain is really cool. I haven't really played the other vehicles so I couldn't say how those worked. I enjoy free riding more and this game doesn't really deliver like the first two did.
Overall though, if you are a fan of these types of games, I'd say it's definitely a buy. Or at least a rental.
Don't listen to the haters, this is an amazing game. I ride dirtbikes in real life and have played every Mx game since ATV Offroad Fury on the PS2. People are bashing this game, saying that it is impossible to control when in reality, the Reflex system adds a whole new dimension. Think about it, if you threw your leg over a motorcycle in real life, would you be racing at a pro level in 5 minutes? NO. The learning curve is steeper than it has been in the past, but once you get the hang of the new controls, you will find that the motorcycle actually behaves alot more like it's real world counterpart. This challenge makes it feel that much better when you nail a long rhythm section in a supercross race, or rail a freshly dug berm in a national. There are fewer tracks and freeride areas than in previous games, but the thought and time that went into these aspects are mindblowing. The terrain deformation is AWESOME, its so much more realistic that as a race goes on, lines in the track change, it keeps you on your toes. My only real complaint is that there is a pretty heavy emphasis on winning truck and buggy races, which is an obvious attempt to bring in some of the Motorstorm / Dirt fans. Rainbow should lose this stuff for the next version and put all their focus onto perfecting MX/ATV racing. Overall, it is a game that I will playing and perfecting for a long time, and it will only get better when downloadable tracks become available. Don't buy into the people that hate this game, they just have short attention spans and need immediate gratification. If you guys like the last game so much, you should keep playing that while the rest of us move into the future of MX racing games.
Bought this game as a gift for a 16 yr old family member and he loved it! He played similar games, but this one is his favorite!
The best game out there, because there is only one out there of this class. Whats hot is how your body position affects the handling of the bike, the cornering, the jumps etc. Second the terrain change on every lap, never making the same line twice. What's not hot, the AI is poor you can beat them very easy on the top nivel and that makes you go online and here come the main reason why this game dont have 5 star and this is because it has to be the worst online game in the history, just to get connected to a race can lose 5 min. of you precious gaming time, if you get to play then its ok. TO THQ you can lear a lot on how to make online races by looking at Codemasters games.
When I first popped this game in, I was amazed and played for several hours at a stretch. I was happily carving around on my tricked-out KTM, enjoying the races and jumps, free-rides, and everything else.
After a couple of days, you begin to see there's not a lot there. There aren't many tracks. There's no semblance of an official racing series or a real "career" mode.
Only KTM bikes have been licensed for the game. There are other bikes bearing the distinctive color schemes of other manufacturers, but they have made-up names.
The customization and tuning of the bikes is very simplistic. You simply tune the bike on a sliding scale between hard/soft suspension, acceleration/top speed, soft/sticky tires. The custom parts you can buy mean little - they all have the same values and do the same things, except for the look.
To complete the game you are forced to use buggies, sport trucks, etc. The choices for these vehicles are very limited and these events are uninteresting. Like most people I was only interested in the MX aspect of the game.
Another major annoyance is the frequency with which the computer riders will crash into you and knock you down. It happens far too often that you'll just be running your race and a computer rider comes from nowhere and crashes into you at speed that would cause very serious injury. Due to the lack of realism, you can still win the race often times even with a few crashes.
Next time: give us meaningful customization and tuning, make the rear tire look like it actually spins when you ride, and give us a meaningful career mode instead of the glorified string of single races.
I'd give this one 2 stars out of 5. If you play the demo, you've essentially played the whole game.
Yes it is true do listen. I loved the MX vs ATV series, especially the old ones on PS2, but it is quickly drying up into a shriveled old set of tires. Motor Storm for PS3 brought offroad gaming back to its essence, and has awesome energy, psychics, level design, great graphics and superior level design. This game just runs through the motions of the other ATV games, and tries something called reflex to entice buyers. Well as you see 3 people have reviewed this game on PS3, and 2 for Xbox 360, so that tells you something, they must not have thought much of it, and its not selling. I don't take joy in bashing the game i just realllly wanted it to be great and have some originality, well it doesnt, the free ride is small and awful and there are no mini games like in Mx vs ATV Untamed, which was very good. Either that or i just didnt play long enough to find any, but i just couldnt. First i played the demo, shut it off thinking wow the reflex that supposedly keeps you from wrecking while going through ruts and bad terrain, just doesnt even do anything. Then i wasted [...] bucks to rent the game and did the same thing. All games like pure and dirt, or motor storm give you the option to keep from upsetting your vehicle and its just called moving the controller a certain way so you don't. In this you do the SAME THING or use buttons, who cares? Also i really could not believe the graphics have not stepped forward at all, and look terrible, especially compared to previously mentioned games. Well enough typing about this mess, i'm so disappointed in THQ, grrrr. I won't even get it when it becomes [...] bucks, sorry.
Like the title says that is what it should be called. I used to race motocross and supercross seriously so I have real experience.....but this is a game of course nothing matches the real thing. What ticks me off most about this game is that as soon as you take off of the starting line every single rider is trying their best to knock you down...it's ridiculous. I could be in second place riding great and out of nowhere some rider literally kicks me off the bike.....it is extremely annoying. I am a grown man and I'll get so ticked off I almost want to throw my controller at my tv!! It's a very expensive LCD so I just take a few breaths instead. The graphics look great to me although the amount of ruts and the deepness of them in just 1 lap of racing is so unrealstic......and there should be more than 3 measly laps....even if the levels are long. Again I can be in first place riding flawlessly without a single mistake all the way up into the final lap and fall down once and I am in last place just that quick.......then I have to restart the level. It takes me forever to beat the levels simply because of all the lunatics just knocking everyone over......if this was meant to be a realistic game then in real life these rider's would be put in prison for trying to kill ya.lol
As for the reflex right finger stick I really do like this concept. I mean no it's nothing amazing but it just makes things feel a little cooler being able to adjust the rider's position on the bike....again though this is nothing ground breaking but still kinda cool.
...again I just can't get over how this game is not a motocross/supercross game it's a total destruction derbie game. I purchased this after playing the demo and actually loved the demo but now after purchasing it I feel like I should have just waited and rented it. I've actually managed to almost beat all supercross and nationals(motocross) levels but it was more of a pain in the arse than fun. I don't know why I put myself through the stress, lol, guess I just had to because I paid full price for it.lol
I say definately do not buy this game just rent it.......then bring it right back after playing it for an hour and see if you can manage to swap this one out for another rental.....it's not healthy playing this game too long your blood pressure will go through the roof trust me. It's a shame because this game had so much potential to be one awesome supercross/motocross game.......if only the riders were not trying to kill you the whole time and the ruts did not build up so quickly.......to me those are the 2 man flaws that make this game almost worthless.
