Seriously...pounding on a button to kill bosses is pedantic and ridiculous. I went back and bought this game on a whim and regret every minute of it. The idea that you have to sit and pound on buttons to kill bosses in this game ruins the great story and cool combat that otherwise would have made a solid action game. People look at this game as some kind of holy grail but I canceled my pre-order for GOW 3 after playing both of these sad excuses for action games. RENT this collection first, even if its only 30 bucks...it is cheap and boring.
I was one of the few who never picked up God of War and missed out on a much hyped game (and then the sequel). When I first got the game I played both just to check out the gameplay and graphics. I am impressed with not only the gameplay but also the graphical improvements that make it very playable on my 52 inch screen. The games themselves are not for everyone as they are rated M (blood some cartoon nudity) but they are innovative in many respects and well worth owning.
The bottom line is you get two great games with hours of gameplay that will leave you wanting to purchase the third installment which will inevitably look great on the PS3 blue ray system. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an action title on the PS3.
While God of War III will be the prettiest yet by leaps and bounds, this compilation is pretty sweet. Enhanced HD graphics, although you can still tell their PS2 games, but that's part of the charm. I recommend this for anyone with a PS3 and, like me, a God of War obsession. From most gaming board posts, it might freeze once in a blue moon, but it's worth the time. A definite must have!!
Simply put, this a must have title for GOW fans and anybody who owns a PS3 and loves action games. It's one thing to play GOW 1 & 2 on the PS2 on an LCD HDTV, but the crisp HD visuals Sony Santa Monica Studios provide in the GOW Collection really make the experience wholly amazing. These two games belong in everybody's game collection. The addition of trophy support really drew me in the play the collection several times to get the FULL experience. On this one disk, you'll get A LOT bang for you buck. No questions asked, this game deserves a full 5 out of 5 stars.
I had heard of the God of War series for several years now but never played them since I didn't own a Playstation 2. Once I picked up a PS3 and saw the low price this game was going for, I decided to give these classic PS2 games a try. This pair of games has to be one of the best deals in all of gaming right now, and if like me you haven't played God of War before you should seriously think about getting this game. These games are pretty gory and violent, so if you're a parent you might not want your younger children playing this game, but it's isn't any more violent than a lot of other popular M rated games currently available.
Everything about these games is fantastic. The controls are reasonably simple yet deep enough to add real strategy to this game (mindless button mashing mostly works on lower difficulty levels, and absolutely does not work on higher difficulty levels), and most importantly, are precise. The animation and art in this game are top-notch. While God of War isn't really faithful to its source material, this doesn't really matter, and if the game gets teenagers more interested in reading classical mythology, that's a fantastic side effect of a game which is already lots of fun to play. There is a lot of bonus content which only becomes unlocked after beating the game, some of which requires you to beat the game at the highest difficulty level, so for very serious players there's plenty of challenge to be had here.
The graphics have been upgraded from the original PS2 games, although of course these games don't look as good as games which were designed for PS3. Nevertheless, the games are much better than what you would have seen on the PS2, and certainly do not detract from the gameplay experience. It's a bit odd that some of the cut scenes weren't remastered, but this is just a minor issue since these cut scenes are only a minor part of the game.
Two awesome games at a really low price make this a great purchase. As if you weren't already getting enough when you buy this game, you also get a code which lets you download the 2009 E3 God of War III playable demo, and of course if you buy this game at Amazon right now you get a 5 dollar credit towards GOW3. Remaking great PS2 games and releasing them on the PS3 for a budget price is a fantastic idea, and hopefully other publishers and developers will follow in SCEA's footsteps and release their own compilations of classic PS2 games on the PS3.
I bought the original GoW (PS2) for cheap, soon after buying the PS3. Although it was fun, I didn't get very far because the graphics were tough to look at on the PS3. So, it just sat there. But when this collection came out, and I heard they reformatted both games for the PS3, I jumped on it. Needless to say, I played right through both games without skipping a beat. Actually had GoW 3 sitting on the shelf waiting, for when I finished part 2. Part 2 was even better than the first. The scenery was awesome!
Besides being great to look at...yes, the gameplay was very addicting. As you progress through the game, upgrading your weapons and finding new ones, Kratos becomes more powerful, and fun to control!
The cut scenes and story keep it very entertaining. Buyer beware...some of the scenes are VERY graphic (ok, most of them are).
BUY IT! Then buy part 3!
One of the best games i've ever played. Cant wait to finish both games and finally play God of War III.
GoW is one of the best games currently available for PS3. Other games such inFamous and Dante's Inferno are simply following the same approach and adding a couple of elements, but I would say that GoW is the one that established the standards these new adventure games are following.
I have played both GoW and GoWII on my old PS2, and now I am playing them again on PS3. The graphics are stunning (using a Full HD TV and HDMI cable) and the sound is awesome (using a 1000w HT and an Optical Cable).
Even one of these two games deserve $30 bulks. Way better than a lot of ps3 action video games currently. Story is better told than Ninja gaiden.
The poor animation is the only thing I feel bad for.
I didn't have a PS2, so I couldn't play GOW I or II, I heard that they were the best PS2 games and I wanted to played them so much!!! so I got really excited when I saw the preview of this game. I'll buy the GOW III, and I recomend to all the people who will (and haven`t played the GOW I & II) to buy this Collection, it has an awesome price, the graphics are nice, the gameplay is the best, there are two games in one (excellent games!!!). If you're doubting, don't. This is the deal of the year!!!
I am writing this having only played the first God of War game on this disk, but it's already worth the price of admission. I missed these games on the PS2, but the remastered HD graphics make it look at least as good as an early PS3 game, and the gameplay is fantastic and highly addictive. There's not much else to say other than it is the most fun I've ever had with this kind of hack-n-slash action game. Yes, the cut scenes are still in standard def, but it's not as jarring as some make it out to be in my opinion.
That said, do NOT let your kids play this. It is the video game equivalent of a hard R-rated action film: it's violent, bloody, and has the gratuitous nudity one would expect from an R-rated movie. This game is obviously and unashamedly targeted at the 18+ Spike TV male demographic, and pulls no punches on that front. It's over-the-top visceral manly-man ridiculous action stuff.
All of that out of the way, this 2-game package is the best value for your money on any system right now, even if it only included one of the games. The fact that they included both is just an insane deal.
Despite owning a PS2 since it came out and collecting a sizable game library, I somehow managed to avoid buying and playing these games until Christmas 2009. I got God of War: Chains of Olympus when it was released on PSP and loved it. So I figured this would be a good purchase. I couldn't have been more right. These games are magnificent in every way; the gameplay is fun and addicting, the story is wonderful and keeps you engaged, and the scale of your enemies constantly reminds you that you are a mortal fighting immortal beings. Some of the puzzles are obnoxious and seem like they're inserted just to make you want to throw your controller across the room, but despite this flaw (which some probably don't even consider flaws) GoW and GoW II are two titles that you must play if you own a PS3, especially with the upcoming release of God of War III. ZEUS! YOUR SON HAS RETURNED IN HD! AND HE BRINGS THE DESTRUCTION OF OLYMPUS!
To start, I had became a fan of God of war since 2007 when i bought my ps3, and I borrowed God of War 1, after that I bought both games new for my collection and I loved them, the best action games, and franchise ever of the genre. A lot more than ninja Gaiden which is supposed to be the best for xbox. So why is it worth??? Well is like buying your favorite movie in Blu-ray, you love that movie, you owned on VHS, then on DVD, for the quality, and of course if its out on Blu ray, the answer is obvious.
I know not everyoine likes it, but if you haven't played it, give yourself a chance, you'll be hooked up. And like, Casablanca, La vita e Bella or those classic films, this game is one of those that really trascend not for its sales, or multiplayer, but for the entire epic scale, that really makes the word art, really mean something on videogames.
Now waiting for the makers of Ico and Shadow of the Colosuss to follow this pattern.
Its a great game. it will keep you busy but play in order GoW -> GoW II so you can understand the story then try GoW III
I have played this on release day for the PS2 back in 2007 and loved every minute of it. I bought this again to get ready to play the new God of War 3. It was even better than what i remembered. Graphics are a little block in the beginning of the first game, but after a couple hours into it seem to be gone. Controls are smooth, responsive and intuitive even to the beginner gamer. I would highly recommend to any PS3 owner to get this game for their collection you cannot go with out it.
