Modern Warfare 2 is probably the prettiest-looking game I've ever played on my PS3. The environments are amazing, and I've yet to experience even a single minor bug or graphics hiccup. There are plenty of reviews out there explaining that this game is the greatest work of Western civilization ever, but as someone who isn't all that into getting randomly headshot online or worrying about my kill/death ratio, there are a few features of this game that render it less than perfect.

-- Plot. The plot in the one-player MW2 storyline borders on insane. It simply makes no sense -- and yes, I played the original. Random characters flit in and out of missions like strangers getting on and off a bus. One mission seems to set up one soldier as the main character, only to have the next mission see him randomly executed. It's like trying to follow a movie where not only is there no main character, but even the various supporting characters never even meet one another. This is not a Tarantino-esque multiple storyline/flashback model, it rather feels like the programmers had a bunch of cool level designs cooked up, and then had to go back and figure out a way to slap them together into a story. One mission you're a soldier in dusty Iraq, the next you're a completely different guy careening down a frozen mountain on a snowmobile. Even though it is easy to get lost in the delicious chaos of a particular level, the connecting storyline is simply baffling.

-- Gameplay. The gameplay is to be lauded -- mostly. Enemy AI is extremely good, the physical level designs are fun and non-linear, and there is a wide range of weapons and ammo to be found everywhere. However, certain annoying affectations remain. Foremost among these is an ingrained disdain for simply shooting at people with your gun's crosshairs. MW2 derides this as "firing from the hip" even though your gun is clearly held at shoulder level, and it also happens to be how almost every other FPS in existence operates. But MW2 practically demands that you specifically aim each gun rather than "fire from the hip" -- said aiming gives you a momentary lock on a target and hopefully allows you to put them down in a quick burst. However, it quickly becomes extremely difficult to do this in actual combat when there are dozens of enemies running around and peppering you with shots. Although you can duck or lie down, there is no "cover" button like that found in Rainbow Six Vegas 2, so the time it takes you to actually "aim" at a target means you are exposed and getting blasted by the inhumanely fast computer enemies. Most weapons don't have scopes so aiming means trying to use crude rifle sights, which immeditely go off target from the recoil when your automatic weapon fires anyway. And when you get hit, your entire screen fills up with blood splatter like someone hit you in the face with a can of tomato soup. Which -- wait for it -- makes it almost impossible to see through your sights to aim at anyone! This results in painful and exhausting battles where you have to pop out of cover, quickly aim at someone, try to get a shot off before you get tomato-souped in the face, duck back behind cover, wait to heal, and repeat. There are checkpoints in missions, but after a while getting whacked over and over and over in the same blind alley filled with 100 guys gets a little old. Much of this agony would be alleviated if you could just hit guys with your regular crosshairs from more than 10 feet away. But no. For a game that purports to love surgical precision, it's telling that a more effective approach often involves shotguns, grenades, and blind screaming kamikazee charges.

-- Fun. Unfortunately, most of the visceral fun of the game is to be found online or in co-op, neither of which particularly lend themselves to plot or character development. Co-op is a nice addition although it is really a penned online equivalent where nameless co-op buddies engage in various set-piece battles. What would have been fantastic would have been a co-op main storyline, which has been done well elsewhere (Army of Two, for example). Simply fending off armies of computer drones gets stale after a while. The co-op experience is ultimately a shallow one, where you repeatedly play missions just to better your time or accomplish other arbitrary tasks. Worse, the missions themselves are adequate but overshadowed by the more impressive ones in the one-player storyline.

At the end of the day, MW2 couples an impressive but truly bizarre one-player storyline with the more fun but significantly shallower co-op and online options in a way that is extremely fun in the short term but ultimately unsatisfying in the long run. I'm as big a fan of mindless violence as the next guy, but its overabundance here is actually what keeps this from being the ultimate game. This is a great rest stop along the way, but the search for the perfect game will soon move on.

The multiplayer is what makes this game a cut above the rest. I already have it for PC but bought it for PS3 to change things up a bit, its that good!

Not being a teenage gamer, but someone who appreciates a game like this after a day of dealing with stupid people at work, it is an excellent stress reliever. Best 50 bucks of therapy money can buy. The online gaming is vastly improved over the original modern warfare, and even though I am still much slower than most of the gaming freaks out there, it is still fun. Private games with a couple buddies from around the world really make it an enjoyable way to spend time with some friends you don't get to talk to or see all the time.

From some friends around that have played on Xbox, and PS3, say the PS3(full 1080) is much better graphically.

This game definitely does not live up to the hype.

From the start you are assigned to a commander or sergeant, where he tells you what to do. You're basically playing a game of follow the leader.

I thought this game was going to be better than Uncharted 2, which is one hell of a game, but turned out to be very mediocre at best.

Save your money.

Amazing game. Graphics are incredible, the storyline is a ton of fun and yeah the online is struggling right now but they'll have it fixed. If you liked the first modernwarfare, then you'll like this no problem

Ok i thorougly enjoy this game .. i know people are sayign the campaign is too short but in all honesty ... ill take 5 or 6 hours of quality gameplay over 10-12 of repetitive mundane and buggy gameplay .....as for the MP its the same as the previous ones but the options for customization are sooooo much deeper its amazing ... also ive heard people complain that its a little easier to kill people (not necessarily on any reviews here just in general ) well that doesnt make it easier to die ? lol special ops is ok im not a huge fan but its a fun diversion from MP once in a while

i got this for my 11-yr-old son. he loves the game. i think it's a little bloody and it is rated "M." he has the ps3 and goes on-line and plays with his friends. i'm not a gamer and i've never played so i can't get into all the levels and details and graphics, but if your looking for a game for a boy i recommend it.

Best FPS I've played in a long time. The story is great and the multiplayer keeps you wanting to play more. I used to be a FPS gamer, until somebody introduced me into WoW (yeah I know) and got hooked on that for a few years, now MW2 gets all my free time.

Yes, you heard right, I am a part time Christian youth leader at my church and I enjoy Modern Warfare 2. A lot of my boys are also hardcore gamers so it gives me something to relate to. The only reason I'm telling you this is to make a point that you don't have to be the stereotype extreme conservative to be Christian, I still know how to have fun. Anyway, about the game...

All in all, the game has been very fun, very intense and very addictive. I think I am about halfway through at this point. So far, I have enjoyed the various missions and multiple weapons in the game. During your experience you will shoot enemies while on a snowmobile, destroy helicoptors with RPG's, level tanks and structures with air strikes, break dog's necks, snipe bombers from a distance and battle through countless gunfights. This game outclasses Halo as a 1st person shooter in every way. The fighting is better, the campaign is better with more variety, and the graphics are better.

There are a few cons I think people should be aware of: One is the airport shooting scene. I know there is the option to skip which is good, but I don't think mowing down innocent unarmed civilians should have even been an option to the player at all, this is Call of Duty, not Grand Theft Auto. I played through it without shooting any civilians but I still found it disturbing. I'm not trying to whine, but even in a video game, I still like to feel like I am the good guy doing his good deed, another example was Bioshock, I couldn't harvest the little girls, I had to save them. The other problem I had with the game is that unlike Rainbow Six, you can't get behind cover, stick your weapon out and shoot, I think this is something they should have upgraded in the second game.

Anyway, like I was saying earlier, good solid game, a lot of fun to play, if it weren't for the two reasons mentioned above, I would have given this game 5 stars. At least I'm not one of those people who will give a game one star because of one small thing that they didn't like.

This game is one of the best games ive ever played. it has a really good storyline. And also had one of the best online playing. If you played modern warfare 1 then this is basically a add on, except a way better storyline. If your looking to buy this, go ahead because its totally worth the money..
