...buy this game already. It's too much fun. There's so many ways to play this game, and there's such a great atmosphere to this game, Rapture is an incredibly engaging world. Get this game already, you're wasting time reading this.
I own this on xbox 360, ps3 and PC. While the PC graphics are indeed the best of the 3, the ps3 graphics blow the 360 version out of the water. Maybe that's because they had more time to perfect them, but this is true 1080p compared to the 360's 720. The story, characters and atmoshphere in this game cannot be beat. Do yourself a favor and pay 16 bucks for this game, it is worth every penny!
Stop reading this and buy it! Well seriously, this is a great game that combines elements from video games genres like FPS, adventure, horror and a little bit of RPGs. Graphics are top notch, effects like water and fire are superb, the design of the characters is quite nice (although cartoon-ish) and the environment is just mesmerizing... you certainly feel like playing inside an underwater eden gone bad. Just one thing the framerate once in a while dips a little bit but is not enough to harm the overall experience.
The gameplay... I have to say IMHO that this game is no ordinary FPS, you will be exploring this massive underwater setting while fighting the very quirky (and smart) splicers. And by fighting I mean burning, freezing, electroshocking, and throwing them with your powers... Of course you have weapons found in every other games like a gun, shotgun, machinegun and the trusty wrench.
About the story... Well it is sublime and told in an engrossing way, it may not be Metal Gear Solid's but the story is good enough and worth mentioning, and very translatable to the realm of movies. And has an AMAZING twist!!!
Conclusion: if you like adventure games or... if you like games that can be considered as art don't let this one go you won't regret it.
I haven't played many games as startling and fun as this. The last game I played that made me feel as on edge as this does was Duke Nuke'm 3D back in the day. It's a mind job if there ever was one. The enemies babble on throughout the world, and pop up in places you may have already "cleared". They say random nonsense, putting you in an anxious state as one would feel if a real psychopath was rattling on during a train ride downtown.
There are expansive abilities to find and use, secret areas and hidden objects, and the story has you distrusting just about everyone involved in your efforts to survive the city. The first time you hear a Big Daddy truly gets the heart racing. This is on on-edge, watch-your-back kind of game if there ever was one. If you're into this types of suspenseful entertainment, this is a sure fire hit.
This game is excellent...I just play Fallout 3 and this is better! At its current price, it is an excellent buy!
To start, Bioshock is an excellent game. The reasons for this have been covered quite well in previous reviews, and I don't think I need to retread them here. The setting is beautifully realized, the story is interesting, the plasmid system is varied and fun, allowing many ways to approach the same battle. In general, if you enjoy first person shooters, you'll likely enjoy this game.
There are only a couple of additional points worth mentioning.
-- The game only has one control scheme. As a lefty, I was hoping that there would be some degree of configuration available, as I would have like to flip the functions of the shoulder buttons and analog sticks. As I couldn't, all of the fine aiming had to be done with my right hand, which I'm less proficient with. This is not an uncommon problem with console shooters, but in a title that is otherwise extremely well polished, it was slightly disappointing. Enough so, that in retrospect I think I would have been better off with the PC version.
-- The pacing of the story does break down a little in the latter third. I felt like the actual climax happened far too early in the story, and that threw the story off the rails for the latter part of the game, which near the end made me a little impatient, and I found myself slogging through just to finish it. I might replay the first 2/3 of the game again, but I doubt I'll do another full play-through.
-- Another reason I bought this version is the promise of extra content, in the form of challenge rooms. While this is more a failure in my own research, I assumed this would be included free, as this version already cost more than the PC/360 versions, but it's a pay add-on. I don't fault the game for this, but it may have affected my purchase decision.
BioShock was the first game I ever played that was a first person shooter. I thought the gameplay was great and really fun. The story is almost better than the gameplay itself. The story is filled with mystery and has many shocking twists through the game. One thing I liked is that it was totally original. Whether it was the settings, the story, or the characters, I have never seen anything like it. There are so many weapons you can use and three different types of special ammo for each of those weapons. You can also use plasmids which are like special powers and they are very easy to use. You can upgrade almost everything in this game when you get enough money. The PS3 version has trophy support and DLC challenge rooms. The game has impressive graphics and terrific voice acting. This is a must own game for anyone that likes video games. If you aren't sure if you would like it, just download the demo on the PlayStation Store.
I was totally shocked by the awesomeness of this game. The concept is amazing and the overall game is just great. It is a suspense/thriller type of FPS so it is at first Very VERY scary to play - it took me a week to get used to the shocks. I cannot wait for the sequel!
Bioshock is overall just a great game. I own the PS3 version of it and I was impressed as soon as the opening cut-scene took place. I have played many games, and many first-person shooters, but Bioshock is entirely on a league of its own. It has amazing graphics and the entire game keeps you in suspense with eerie looking surroundings and odd screeching sounds that seem to surround your player.
This game has a nifty little feature where the game will give you hints as where you need to go in the event you get lost, a very helpful feature since there have been many games where they just throw you in a stage with out a single clue as to where to go, adding salt to frustration. This is probably one of the best horror/first-person shooters I have ever played. This game is right on top of the list of my favorite games along with the Fatal Frame series.
i gave this as a present to my brother. he likes it and hasnt complained so i give it 5/5
halls stained with blood, pipes leaking, broken walls and cracked glass. the badly lite areas set a tone in Rapture unlike any other game, bioshock is a rare FPS (first person shooter). you find you're self trapped in a under water city thats gone to hell, Rapture would have been the future had it not been for a great power struggle. void of any cutscenes the game lets you take full control from begining to end, the story is unlike any other and will leave you breathless. bioshock is a highly review game for one reason, its greatness is unlike any other. hacking, poers, weapons, and a stoy unlike any other will keep you wanted more and more. bioshock is well wroth what ever you pay for it, you will play it over and over till you feel like you have lived in Rapture
Great game, gorgeous graphics and sounds. I'm into all the RE2, COD, Brothers in Arms and Dead Space type games, but this FPS is very unique and worth playing just to experience the gameplay. This is not a game that you should miss if you own the PS3. Every review here is accurate.
Jan. 27. I'm playing this the second time on "hard" and its great. After the first run through it appears to fly by. This time I'm making sure to find all the sisters. Great game!!
March 11, I'm on my third time through, only harvesting the sisters on the toughest level. Way challenging, lots of replay value and I can't wait for Bioshock 2 in Dec 09.
April 15: Sold RE5 and went back to playing this game. I purchased and currently playing the dowloaded content. The game also offers an opportunity to start a new game with all your weapons. end.
Bioshock is the epitome of what gaming should be -- brilliant story telling, endless exploration, limitless customization, movie-quality dialogue, memorable characters and locations, incredible visuals, and most importantly, perfectly refined gameplay.
Considering how much this game is selling for, it deserves a place in every gamer's collection.
The FPS genre today is missing something: originality. Most two-bit shooters feature a gunslinging commando fighting off hordes of bug mutants of the 5th dimension (in other games, it's Nazis), all tied together with a goofy, testosterone-soaked story. So once Bioshock appeared the radar screen, everyone kept a curious eye on it's heavy 50's nostalgic enviroment.
Originality is what was key for seperating Bioshock from all others, showing the player a variety that no other has done. Origonality, as in creating a Atlantis-esque city as the setting. Originality, as in keeping the tone straight 50's, from music, to buildings, to language to dress code. Imagine a gargatuan Divign Suit man, wandering around with little girls with hyperdermic needles, that's very original.
But the real question is, "Can Bioshock keep it's originality, and still be fun"? 2K made Bioshock into an outstanding game. The controls feel fluid and very user-friendly, and graphics where slick (I encountered only one frame-rate issue.) The setting and Big Daddy battles where the two features that sold me; fighting a goon, who's in a Diving Suit, with a 100lb drill that KO's you into neon lights fixtures, while Billy Holiday sings in the backround is an experience that I've seen from no other. Bioshock will be a cult classic, because it is so unique from anything else. Is it original to have powers such as incineration, swarms of bugs and electricity at your finger tips, and give them an equal role as guns and gernades and an FPS? You bet.
Bioshock is a must play game, there is nothing queit like it anywhere. The problem I had that kept it from achieving a perfect score is not the story, but it's presentation. The plot holds it's own, telling of a utopia gone wrong, and you are (what seems to be) a man in the wrong-place wrong-time scenario, witnessing the aftermath of a civil war of the civilians. It is all told through audio logs, which I can appriciate, but all of them where turned down so low, I could bearly hear what was going on. Subtitles where microscopic (I'm playing on a SD, 19inch, so it's partialy my fault), and I'd constantly have to pause the game and listen in complete silence to find out what was happening. It took me out of the experiance on many occasions. Other than that, Bioshock is a must play for any fan of any genre, period. It would recieve a 9/10
My first PS3 game.
Graphics are great, good game to play in the dark...pretty spooky.
I am not a huge FPS fan so on normal mode I was struggling and had to change it to easy which made it not quite as fun or scary because it became to easy. In fact it's getting downright boring so I'm going to switch it back to normal and get back into it because it really is a great game.
Not what I expected AT ALL, this game sure through me for a loop at first. I thought I had it all figured out before I even tried it out, but the storyline is something very different and cool.
Great game, not the best but there's much much worse out there....
_______________
UPDATE: okay last night I put it back on normal difficulty and the game is fun again. the splicers freak me out again because I know I can no longer take them out with one hit and the big daddy's are a pain in the butt. but that really made the difference. i just wish i didn't suck so bad at video games especially FPS....easy is just too easy and normal is a good challenge for the folks like me who just can't get used to FPS....4.5 stars!!
