To put it simply, Batman Arkham Asylum is to the video games, as what The Dark Night and Batman Begins was the films. It's Batman done right! Furthermore, it restores Batman to the iconic hero status he rightfully deserves.

As many reviewers have already pointed out, the game does have many resemblances to the 90s animated series, "Batman: The Animated Series". For starters the game was written by Paul Dini who wrote the fantastic "The Animated Series". In addition to the phenomenal script, many of the same voice talent reprise there roles in the game.

Mark Hamill gives the performance of a lifetime as the Joker. He graceful manages to flesh out the Joker as a character you love to hate. He is funny and charming, while at the same time sinister and diabolical. The Joker's portrayal in the game is one of the greatest performances of a villain in any form of media, let alone video games. The rest of the voice talent is all delivered superbly, but Hamill manages to steal the show.

The game's story is simple, yet epic. The Joker manages to free all of the inmates and super villains in Arkham Asylum, springing an elaborate trap for Batman. The story sets the stage for Batman's greatest challenge yet.

One of the games greatest achievements is bringing the Asylum itself to life. The massive Asylum is rendered in painstaking detail, with architecture from Gothic and Victorian periods. The game's level design is without a doubt some of the best I've seen. The game has an open world aspect to it, where Batman can freely move from section to section. Batman isn't able to access all areas from the beginning though. You will need to revisit some areas after you have procured more gadgets. Revisiting areas never feels like a chore though.

At the heart and soul of the game are its controls. The games combat system is simple to grasp, but takes practice to master. Batman has no trouble brawling though fights, even while being outnumbered with 10 to 1 odds. As you progress through the game, you will unlock many other moves, skills, and perks. This progression really gives a sense of accomplishment and achievement. It also helps to keep things interesting during the course of the game.

In addition to hand to hand combat, Batman has an arsenal of interesting gadgets at his disposal. Similar to the combat system, Batman unlocks more gadgets as the game progresses. All of which are implemented perfectly. The gadgets add a whole other dimension to fighting and stalking your prey.

Between the combat and the gadgets, the game never feels repetitive. Confrontational sequences can always be approached from a variety of ways. However the battles end up playing out, they are always exhilarating.

In addition to one of the most solid single player experiences ever seen, there is also a staggering amount of extra content on the disc. As you solve the Riddler's clues and find his hidden trinkets, you unlock extra content on the disc. There are a large number of character bios from the Batman universe. Each has a well written history. The villains also have voice recordings which can be found throughout the course of the game. The tapes serve as a rare glimpse into the psyche of each of the characters. There are also character trophies, which are detailed renderings of the characters which you can view freely in 3D. And in addition to that there are challenge maps. The challenge maps are basically challenges for Batman (or the Joker) to take on waves of foes. Objectives are usually high score or time based.

The game succeeds in putting into Batman's shoes. You will know what it's like to stalk your prey from afar, brawl through waves of thugs, be the world's greatest detective, and use nifty high tech gadgets. In addition to donning the cape and cowl, you will be immersed in the environment and fantastic characters. I highly recommend this game to everyone. Everyone should experience what its like to be the Caped Crusader and say, "I'm BATMAN!"

The story has been told already (read other reviewers comments), this game is (in my opinion)by far the best game produced this year.........good show and great work "Rocksteady!!!" The graphics were nothing short of outstanding, the mood of the game is "right on", the feeling of really being "Batman" is great, the gameplay is fantastic! There is no way anyone cannot say this is not a awesome game.....period!

Being able to move around the whole Arkham Asylum was perfect....you do not feel restrained at all, definitely felt like "sandbox" gameplay to me! Loved the "realness" of the story, character(s).....dark (definitely a more reality based game style and great representation of my understanding of Batman and his world).

The story is simply perfect.......!!!!!!! The gadgets are great (look forward to the sequel and more gadgets!!!!), the characters (all of them...) in the game are all all perfect, the game gives you an in depth knowledge of all the characters, and allows you to find out about others who are even in the game.....simply perfect!

Again, The game again is easily one of the best games produced in 09' (should have won game of the year.....but was at least a runner up.). I would give the game 10 stars for a rating if I could!

Let me first start out by saying I have both a PS3 and Xbox 360 I must say that the PS3 version of the game just Looks and reacts better then the 360 version. I have gone through the game on easy and beat it in about 8 hours this is without doing the side missions and finding all of the riddles( all 240 of them) which is every odd for a Gamer like Me because I beat Halo 3 on Legendary in 5 hours. so instead of telling what the game is like i will just mak a List of Pro's and Con's

Pro's

1. Long game to beat if you do all of the extra stuff

2. GREAT Graphics

3. The free flow combat could be a game in its self

4. Great story line

5. there is actually a challenge to the game!

Con's

1. Bosses can be a little aggravating

2. Parts in the game that don't make since

3. A couple of glitches nothing to serious

Now please just go out an buy the game

I loved this game for the first 5 hrs after that it got kinda easy but I still finished it. The game is very well executed and the controls are sharp. You have a variety of ways to take down your enemies and the detective mode is impressive I found myself playing 80% of the game in the detective mode do to its high detailed approach (loved the xray through the walls and the red tagged for armed foes). Overall great game great graphics great execution if you are a Batman fan you wont be disappointed, finally a game that brings out the dark nature in the dark knight.

Having grown up with the comics and cheered through the resurrection of the movie franchise, I had high hopes for this game. The game met or beat every expectation. The art designers captured the darkness and havoc of an island full of insane inmates run amuck; the developers gave players great control over Batman and his storied arsenal. The narrative shows that this is going to be a long night for the Dark Knight and as a player, be ready for long nights of guiding Batman through the levels. It's an great game, probably the best superhero genre game I've played. Highly recommended.

This game is one of the best games to come out for PS3 thus far. It's incredibly fun and the production value is through the roof. The story is interesting, and the game does a great job of giving you a wide spectrum of characters to interact with. I love the amount of unlockable content this game has.. it really ups the replay value. I think this might be an early and potential candidate for game of the year 2009. I highly recommend this to any and all lovers of Batman, super heroes, or video games in general!

Hi,

I Just got my ps3 a week back and this was the first game i ordered..

the story line is awesome and the music is exactly the one that was used in the movie dark knight which i loved. since they have all the licensed material it is the most authentic batman game ever!!! and there are places where u need to do a lot of thinking. its not jus run around kill people. you have to plan each move and the villain ai is also nice where once they get terrified they act differently. and batman's concept is all of invoking fear and the unknown into the enemies and the game does justice to that concept of the 'Silent Knight'.

utterly enjoyable on the first go, i have been hooked on the story for last day. but in a mild way its not very addictive to be a concern for parents. the different ways and combos in which u can kill an enemy is innumerable, with more and more upgrades available in them for solving puzzles and mysteries.

a good batman game and a better batman movie too! the voices for charachter are also great it has to be said!

If you like Batman, stop reading and buy the game. This is simply one of the best incarnation of Batman anywhere and one of the best games of the year on any system.

If you are a gamer looking for a great game, with great visual, additive gameplay, and a lot of bonus materials that will keep you busy for hours, this is a great choice. Every one of my friends that have played the game, have liked it. The controls are simple, yet provide a lot of options and feel very fluid. The voice acting is really good and is complemented beautifully by the great graphics.

Some of the bosses could use a little more variety, but that is just a minor complaint.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who can play it. It may be a little too dark for the younger audience, keep that in mind.

I read so many positive, glowing reviews for this game so i was expecting it to be good. I was not expecting it to be THIS good. The demo is fun, but really just scratches the surface of what this title has to offer. A huge mix of gameplay elements are all woven together perfectly and paced well with an intriguing and well-delivered story. This game is the total package whether you are a batman fan or not. Games with this level of detail and craftsmanship are few and far between. Comparisons to Bioshock are justified in the way it uses in-game narrative to advance the story, but personally, I am enjoying Batman more than 2007's game of the year. It's THAT good.

Without dissecting each little piece of the game, let me just say that every aspect is nearly flawless in execution, and when it all comes together, this is one you don't want to miss! Bravo to Rocksteady for such fine work.

I just want to start this review off by saying that I'm not a forever following Batman fan and probably never would have bought the game if it didn't come in my PS3. I will say though that the game is a great one. It's fun throughout the story draws you in and keeps you throughout. The fighting is complicated to learn but once you play through you will get it in not too long and then you feel you are batman from jumping from guy to guy in one fluid motion. It is a great game. One thing I will say after you beat it the first time it is WAY to easy to beat it again. Really what game isn't though. It's a good one I recommend it even if you are not a diehard fan of batman or his games.
