I didn't know what to expect when I got this game because it got a bad review in Game Informer. Now I know the reviews on this game are very wrong, this game rocks. You get to choose between an alien, predator,or a marine. The game feels pretty reallistic with it's dark environements. The sounds in the game sound like your in one of the movies. Enemies move around running up walls and sneaking behind you to move in for the kill, when you hear you life sensor starts beeping your heart starts pounding with excitement wondering where will it pop out from or wondering where that hissing noise is comming from. All in All it is a fun game to play and if you like the movies and games of this franchise than you should buy it, you won't be dissapointed, don't listen to the tabloids, they are wrong.
1st: I am an avid fan of the film franchise. I love both these xenomorph motha's. They're the greatest in their own respective rights.
2nd: I have severe migraine problems... so I really cant enjoy 1st person shooters.
Now Business!!! I could never enjoy the tom clancy stuff or the call of duty games. I've lost out on so many great games. Than Dead Space dropped and i realized that i was getting the migraines from the brightness of the stages. I was mildly saved. I played the games with sun glasses and was ok... Dead Space being an exception (the scenes in the game were dark and managable). Needless to say, I waited for this game with saliva in my mouth foaming. I preordered. I ran around in the demo. I loved every moment. of my anticipation.
I picked it up this morning and HAVE NOT BEEN LET DOWN!!!! I love the fear of it all! running around in the dark... as a marine looking down at my motion tracker and $ hitting my pants at the sound of something moving... somewhere. I play the game in the dark as i've heard it the best way to play this game anyway (i cant imagine how counter-productive it must be to play with the lights on). Well, my six year old daughter ran away because in her words: "DADDY, THAT GAME IS SCARY!" Its fun and I give five stars to Sega for dropping a game dark enough for us Vampires lol.
Its too early to give a total reveiw of the three campaigns in my case... but so far so good. the game is fantastic and is money well spent. Honestly, I believe I will enjoy this game for weeks to come... and thats coming from a person who has to wear sun glasses in the house at night :)
If you liked the first AVP that came out back in the day then your in for a treat. I picked up this game not knowing what to expect. I just finished the marine campaign, which has a dead space feel, and then the Alien campaign which was loads of fun. Where this game really shines is in the Predator campaign, which so far is fantastic. Stealth, lots of cool weapons and a completly redesigned control system from the first give the Predator campaign an awesome feel.
Great game, awesome fun. Don't believe the negative fuss in IGN and Gamespot who for the most part wouldn't know a good game if it hit them in the face.
I preordered Avp excited. I got it, rushed home and started my marine campaign. First, graphics are nice. Everything is dark, creepy. Just enough light to let you see, but also enough to be creepy. The campaign was fun. Pulse Rifle best gun ever. The tracker, adds to the creepyness. The planet outside, nice. Traditional but nice. Second the action, phenomenal. Aliens rushing you, Pulse Rifle firing 100 rounds per clip, you feel the adrenalin flowing, heart pumping. Brilliant. Marine smartgun, and even the trophies are sweet. Predator plasma castor, gory.
The other 2 campaigns are much the same way. Great graphics, superbly brutal kills, 8-10 play time. Aliens need dark. Predator stealth. Nicely incorporated. The game reviers gave it a bad rating. They are truly stupid. Multyplayer, limited yes, glitches yes, is still amazing. This game is superb. Its new in its approach to these game types but also well thought out. Very brutal, good way to let off anger and pass time. Buy it, you won't regret it.
This is a typical horror sci-fi FPS with good graphics, gameplay, and story. Voice acting is good here and weaker there, and overall it feels just like one of the films it's based on. Loads of fun. It doesn't try to do too much, but it definitely feeds any cravings you might have for a sci-fi/action/shoot 'em up survival horror game. Definitely worth a buy at new lower price.
When you go into multiplayer mode with your friends or strangers, you don't get to pick whether you play as a Marine, Predator or Alien. The game automatically chooses who your team will play as. It is very difficult to play as an Alien until you get used to crawling upside down on ceilings, sideways on walls, etc. with no weapon but your tail. Pretty good graphics though.
The reviews by the mainstream weren't very favorable but that's cause there afraid to say they anything is good unless it's Call Of Duty or Halo. It has Bad @** Marines The savageness of The Aliens down & the stalking & stealth style of the Predators down. I guess these idiots who complain about the gameplay never saw any of the movies which I love except for AvP & AVPR I mean WTF setting it on Earth before the the Alien Quadrilogy timeline & no Marines. guess what it takes place on a different planet & we have Marines responding to a distress call it involves the Weyland/Yutani studying Aliens the Marines are there but so are the Predators. You will fight a Predator during the Marine mission & a lot of Predators during the Alien storyline. AvP is a great game the controlls are good graphics are decent & you should purchase it. This goes to show you Paul WS Anderson & the Strause Brothers keep it true to the series & keep it simple & you'll have a winner.
I was really excited when i heard this game was coming out it looked amd sounded awesome and for the most part it is all together awesome, but there are some flaws that just didn't make it a 5 star game.
There are 3 campaigns to play one for each species:
Marine campaign: at first it is great how your in suspense waiting for the alien to pop out of the shadows, but after a couple of encounters it gets pretty predictable and worse when you get surrounded by a gang of them like 3-or 4 your fighting off one in front of you while taking damage from the other sides (behind you) which gets hectic and annoying fast, no matter how good you play you will get hit alot you can run away and get space to shoot them but you will still get hit when running. Also the campaign is based around darkness you have a flashlight and some flares and basically try and survive the alien attacks in semi-darkness which is all it is about surviving, but it is still fun. You only fight the predator once in marine campaign. You can't do any insta/ trophy kills as a human, just push them/melee them off you and shoot them on the ground. Also the flares would be better if they say blinded or burned the aliens or made them get away (which they don't) all they do is temporarily give off light so you can see where to shoot, almost not worth throwing them since you will probably get hit upclose while you do it. Also the enemies are repetitive at points and not alot of variance alot of aliens,a couple of bigger aliens near end, android guards, 1 predator and facehuggers plus 2 or so mediocre boss fights. The storyline is so so nothing special.
Overall marine campaign: 7.5 out of 10
Alien campaign: At first seems really cool can climb on walls and run really fast but it is really short compared to the marine and predator campaigns seems almost like a unlockable mini game or something. Controlling the alien can be really hard and frustrating at times jumping on walls the camera flips upside down and turns sideways which will easily disorientate and confuse you add to this your navigation system is an arrow that does a lousy job, you will spend most of the time lost until you stumble on the vent or way you have to go to proceed to the next area, you only face 3 enemy types marines, android guards and the predators, you can also harvest unarmed civilians with facehuggers. The cutscenes do look nice though and the fight with the 3 predators as the alien is really awesome and the aliens ending and storyline is pretty cool.
Overall Alien campaign: 6.3 out of 10
Predator campaign: (am only halfway through) The only thing here is that it is too easy, i feel that the predator is the superior species easily it can dispatch both humans and aliens pretty easily with all its weapons and invincibility ect. But is the most fun to play as.
Predator campaign: Overall 8.9
Also The melee mechanics ( alien boxing sorta) block, light, heavy attacks could have gotten more work alot more improvement adding combos special moves and better animations would have been much better. Sometimes the graphics and animations seem outdated at times but pretty awesome in others(cutscenes) which looks like some scenes got the most attention while others weren.t rendered as nicely. marines feet would go through stairs while the throphy kills of the alien and predator are pretty awesome looking ( spent most time on probably).
Multiplayer can be pretty fun at times but i don't see it lasting long the 7 modes can only keep a persons interest so long then theres not much more to play for exept different ranks and skins which dont give anything extra skill wise just cosmetically which i wouldn;t keep playing it for. Playing as the predator seems to be an unfair advantage online though.
Rent it for a couple of days beat it play some multiplayer matches for fun then return it would be a good way to go with this game.
This is a fun game. The controls take a minute to get used to, but not too bad once you get the hang of it.
I absolutely loved playing the alien.
I think the campaigns could have been a little longer, though.
And I would have liked the option to play this as a two-player offline. I was looking forward to kicking my husband's a$$ with the alien. ;)
Overall, I had a blast playing it.
Let me start off by saying that the newest "Aliens vs. Predator" game, developed by the same team that developed the original 1999 hit, is fun. Pure fun. Graphic, gory, colorful, dark where it needs to be, AvP is worth purchasing if only for the beautiful visuals and...not so pretty ends to your foes.
Each campaign, as before, is unique. The game builds upon what made 2001's "AvP 2" so fantastic: more flexibility as far as gameplay, nicely cramped spaces, vast and beautifully rendered open areas, a real scare factor on things popping out of the darkness, all that fun stuff. The vision modes for the Predator are pulled right out of the films: the Alien vision mode really ups the insect nature of the four-legged monsters as they crawl about on walls and ceilings like roaches. Sound effects come straight out of the movies; the chatter of the Marines below you as you stalk from above can be entertaining to listen to; Aliens are a genuine threat; and so on.
Now, the bad: where's the plot? From the day it was announced, there was never a mention of a plot. Now, I know the original AvP game had little to no plot, but that was pretty normal for games of that era. We are now in the 21st century, with such games as "inFamous", "Tomb Raider Underworld", and "Halo" keeping their audiences with not only breathtaking visuals and great gameplay, but also a story that sucks you in. This incarnation of AvP lacks what "AvP 2" had: a story, with three campaigns that intertwine and only truly make sense after you've played all three. It was a story about gaining your honor (Predator), freeing your allies and attempting to overtake the planet (Alien), and discovering betrayal and exacting revenge (Marine). More than that, it was fun. This new AvP drags its feet on story; the graphics and fun gameplay simply cannot overcome this easy-to-fix shortcoming.
Still, the game is worth the new release price (which is rather steep, but reasonable). What it lacks (glaringly) in plot, it mostly makes up for in fun. We can only hope that the soon-to-come "Aliens: Colonial Marines" holds a better story than this one does, while also balancing that with fun.
I bought this game blindly without playing it before hand and I have no regrets. I was a little uneasy at first considering that GameSpot rated this game as "mediocre". This game is the opposite of being "mediocre" so in that right GameSpot has lessened their creditability with me. I will admit that I have not finished all of the campaigns yet, I've gotten to about 30% of each campaign to get a feel for how much fun each species is to play. Playing as a human is creepy for the obvious reasons, the Xenomorph is pure fun, and being the Predator is just brutal. The variety of fatalities that you can accomplish are just straight up gruesome. The graphics are great in my opinion, I wasn't sure what some other reviewers were implying about them being sub-par. Multiplayer is fun but not without its flaws. I wish the ranked matches were setup like Modern Warfare 2 (for example) where you play with the same people over and over until you leave. Instead, after completing a ranked match you're sent to the main menu to only have to start over and hopefully find players with a good attitude. Granted, you can work around this by playing a "Friendly Match" but that's boring because you don't accumulate EXP in a non-ranked server. My other problem with multiplayer is you might as well forget ever doing a fatality on someone because another player will almost ALWAYS come up behind and do a fatality on you while you're still in the process of doing a fatality on someone else. This is stupid! You also can't mute (I don't think) the obnoxious "Chatty Cathy" who must narrate everything they are doing. Lastly, the six provided multiplayer maps are kind of dull. Try to not let this deter you, AVP 3 is still a great game. I am optimistic there will be bug fixed, improvements, and map packs in its future.
Fun : 5/5 Stars
Graphics : 5/5 stars
Story : 5/5
Gameplay 2/5
Mapping 3/5
Difficulty 6/5
Multilayer(Xbox live) 4/5
Let me say a synopsis;
Xenomorph : Easy as hell, no challenge at all. FUN FUN FUN.
Marine : Frustrating. In the marine campaign you die at point blank range of killing a xenomorph. The game has lost one star because of the lack of armor from the previous game that could have substituted as protection against the Xenomorphs molecular acid at point blank. Also why use flares instead of the conventional flashlight? Also the game's Zero Checkpoints on Nightmare Difficulty is stupid and unnecessary. Stupid being that it builds way too much tension. Also for those of you who don't know Zero Checkpoints means it means that if you die you start over from point A of the level, saves are also disabled in the Nightmare. The game-play requires way to much "Hit-and-run" tactics and accuracy. Which makes the Marine Campaign unfun. But predator.
Predator : Easy/Frustrating. The marines are easy as hell, Pop stealth get behind them. Fire your laser, Distract. Easy. The XenoMorph's however are Easy/frustrating depending on the difficulty. At the beginning of the level you have two claws as melee. With Practice you can knock them on the ground, grab and lay a finishing move on them which equals Fun. The xenomorphs's are a pain however when on Hard or Nightmare difficulty. Being that you can never knock them down for a finishing move EVER. There is really a lot of strategy to beat them on at the first 3/6 Levels. The game however gets Easier once you get the Disc blade thing, and the spear. Which you can one shot them. Also you don't need to worry about dieing at point blank range from the Xeno's Molecular acid because of the Predator's armor, which makes the predator more fun then the marine campaign.
Consensus: The gameplay is Fun/Easy/Challenging for the most part. But for the Marine Campaign Sega could have tried harder with the mapping and gameplay.
i Pre-ordered this title after p[laying the multiplayer demo on PSN. when i got it i played a little campaign which i liked because i like the story and i like how all three sides are being told, but then it was straight for the multiplayer, the multiplayer was tons of fun, the only problem is i am not used to waiting for a room and waiting for other players. then i get online and see this game has gotten horrible reviews and i dont know why....but the online is way fun if you can get enough players together to get into a room quickly. i would recommend this to other potential buyers because it is fun and the story mode may be short like some say, but you have three campaigns to play through, and like i said the multiplayer is definitely the selling point. look past the other reviews and try this one out if your not sure then i guess rent it. i think alot of ppl are missing out because of miss guided reviews.
The Aliens vs. Predator franchise dates back a good twenty years, and has sparked a host of movies and games to cash in on the success of the survival horror series. Most recently, that was 2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem for the PSP. Now in 2010 we get the launch of Aliens vs. Predator for next gen consoles and PC. Developed by Rebellion and published by SEGA there is a considerable force behind the development of the title. Given as how SEGA hasn't exactly been riding a wave of quality titles in recent times, it was interesting to see how Aliens vs. Predator played out.
The title focuses on the epic battles between the Aliens, the Predators, and the Colonial Marines who are being torn apart somewhere in the middle. The real attraction in the title is that the game can be played from the perspective of any of these three races, each playing entirely differently to the next.
The Aliens are fast and effective at close range. They use the darkness and their physical capabilities to gain the upper hand. They can cling to walls and run along ceilings, and whip enemies feet out from under them using their tails. Darkness is their friend, and they can use it very effectively to gain an edge. Aliens have heightened senses and can smell the scent of enemies, including predators. The aliens are by far the most fun to play, though the way the controls and camera is implemented, movement quickly becomes disorientating and confusing. However, their speed and attacks make them very entertaining for the most part.
The predators are more of a stealth unit. They are best suited to attacking from above, leaping easily from tree to tree, and using cloaking to come at enemies from behind. The predators can cast energy attacks at their enemies as well from a distance, which work somewhat like heat seeking missiles but are fun and easy to power up in the heat of combat. They are weak against the marines' heavy weapons, and their cloaking is ineffective against aliens, so playing the predator means you always have to have your wits about you. Speaking of wits, as a predator you can change your vision to include thermal scanning, allowing you to easily detect humans. Being able to use different forms of vision is a nice addition, and as the predator class isn't altogether that tough you will need all the help you can get. The predator class was probably my least favourite as it simply doesn't feel well implemented at all.
The humans, as can be expected, are the same as humans from any other FPS. They have firepower but lack virtually any other assistance other than a torch and a handful of flares. Playing as the marines is entertaining at times, but the controls across all the different classes are not particularly well structured, making it a challenge at best. Shooting can be so frustrating: at times that you'll plug more bullets into the ceiling and the floor than into the alien standing right in front of you.
The point of the various classes is to tie the storyline together giving you insight into the different sides in the conflict, and this works quite well. However it seems that by branching off in three directions neither of these has received the time and polish that would have been required to create a truly great game. While all the campaigns start off strong they give way to relatively dull levels and some frustrating design choices that leave players wondering if it couldn't have been done better. In next-gen gaming, invisible walls should be a thing of the past, but they're not as the game forcefully pushes you toward the next checkpoint. The AI is also somewhat frustrating as enemies generally fail to abide by any logical rules, often backing straight towards you making it feel like meals on wheels more than anything, particularly when playing aliens or predators.
Graphically Aliens vs. Predator is no great delight. The levels at times look good enough, and the alien character models look fantastic, but the human models on the other hand look downright hideous, so hideous in fact that I thought I was playing Halo again. A highlight however are the fantastic trophy scenes when you decapitate an enemy to pocket the skull. These are gruesome and fun to execute as they vary just enough to not become overly dull too quickly. The audio for the title is also a real highlight. The marine campaign is rather shocking at times, as you hear aliens scuttling through vents above you, frightening the bejesus out of you. This really adds to the atmospherics in some of the darker more brooding levels, feeling something like F.E.A.R. at times.
The online mode surely must be the highlight. A range of game modes are available mixing the three sides against each other. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Infestation, and Predator Hunt which are a bit like Zombie in Halo where one player has to infect the others, and finally a Survivor mode for endless waves of enemies to battle in co-op. Though the controls are still a hassle the advantage surely is that all players are facing the same struggles. Unfortunately though the player base online appears so low its virtually unplayable. So if you plan on picking up Aliens vs. Predator ensure you've got a healthy friends list to team up with online, then there is certainly a lot of fun to be had.
Overall Aliens vs. Predator falls well short of the mark. The games controls are too confusing and the environments frustrating. Sometimes character movement appears inconsistent and this makes flitting from wall to ceiling difficult at times when playing the alien. The graphics are stunning in parts, but below average in others again reflecting the fact that the developers split their efforts across three campaigns, rather than focusing on one and doing it well.
Aliens vs. Predator certainly has much in common with the movies, but possibly isn't quite the answer that fans of the series were wanting in the way of video game fulfilment. Its a good effort no doubt, but its not quite there yet. Maybe the next iteration.
I really enjoyed this game. I loved the ability to play with the three different characters and I thought the campaigns were good, but could be a little longer.
