This game is incredibly fun. There have been mentions in professional reviews about how its just a hack and slash type of game, which is true, but the show was a hack and slash show.
This game earns its Mature rating with rampant profanity, some nudity, and copious amounts of violence and gore. If you're an Afro fan, you probably wanted all of these elements anyway, though.
The two problems in the game lie in the camera and a notoriously cheap boss partway into the game. The camera is inverted left/right and it cannot be changed. This will, at times, cause issues amongst the many of us who are so used to a regular camera. Sometimes the camera also gets stuck behind pieces of scenery and can cause cheap deaths. The other negative would be the flamethrower brother, I won't go into details (as not to spoil) but when you fight him, you'll understand exactly what I mean.
Some may want to wait until the price drops, or it can be found used, before purchasing. However, for fans of the series, it is a great find that sticks to the storyline of the anime quite faithfully.
Son loved the speedy delivery, and the great shape the game came in, rock on!
The game play is great & the graphics is V-good
& The story is good
What I hate about this game is the camera movements & angle
4 stars
Thanks
I have to admit that this game was a bit of a shocker-- it hits hard and fast. There, I confessed. Love the graphics, the story, the content is hilarious, I never expected this thing to work but it's probably going to be one of the must-have-yet-flying-under-the-radar games of the year. I haven't seen it featured in any of the popular gaming mags, probably because it's based on a show and was considered to be a way of cashing in on an existing brand. Oh well, their mistake. Instant cult classic, and yes the gameplay suffers somewhat because of the tripped out camera; however, this is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Games like Tomb Raider Underworld have shown us just how bad whacked-out camera controls really can be, and this game doesn't come anywhere close to being that bad. This game, in a word, is FUN.
Received game quickly and in great condition.
I've yet to see the show but after playing this game I'd really like to. I played the demo for this which made me decide to buy the game. Awesome Samurai game, great style, dialog and story. Sword moves are pretty awesome. Lots of fun tho a little confusing at times as far as figuring out how to beat a couple bosses (had to look it up). Also the game was a little glitchy but only during loading (sound skipped a little, no big deal). All in all definitely worth a play if your into animes, ninja-ish stuff or are just looking for a game to toss in and have a good time.
Are you ready? Because the hunt for the number one has made it to the Playstation 3 system!! With that, i'll start with the overall story of the game (no spoilers). When Afro was a child, he witnessed his father get murdered by a deadly gunslinger named Justice, over an artifact known to the world as the number one headband, which is worn by the greatest warrior on earth. Afro swore revenge on Justice, and years later, attains the number two headband after a sereis of events and betrayals. Now, Afro starts his journey, along with his witty partner Ninja-Ninja, to find and kill the number one..Justice...the man who killed his father. The story to me is pretty good, though some stuff was changed for the game, so don't be suprised if the story isn't quite like the anime series its based from. The graphics in this game are pretty good. The enviorments are sweet to look at, and cutscenes are done in almost like a comic book style. the gameplay is also good. typical hack-n-slash with heavy use of the square and triangle buttons, but it never gets old, when you can cut your eemies in half. Thats right, you can cut your enemies IN HALF, and not the same way everytime. Where you cut them, is where a body part will come off, for example, if you slash horizontaly, their badies will be cut horizontaly. Theres also a cool Focus mode, where you can cut foes in half with deadly percision, but if your in a rush, theres also an even better focus mode triggered by the L2 button, that aloows you to go on a rampage, and kill enemies with just one slash, at deadly speed that gives them no time to run. I just wish there was a challenge mode or something other than just the storymode to play, but thats ok. Now remember, this game is REALLY M rated!! There are topless strippers, the worst language you will ever hear in a video game, and of course ALOT of blood and gore, so keep the kids away, or wait until they go to sleep and then enjoy the game! 5/5.
I received my brand new 250 GB Sony Playstation 3 Slim from Amazon in record time today. I needed a game to play (as all the games and Blu Ray I ordered are currently in shipping). I went to the local Wal-Mart and went through the games, and came across Afro Samurai. The game was only $20 and it was a huge bargain at this price.
I hooked the PS3 up and was immediately WOWED by the visuals. I opened the game, put the disk in, and here is my review of Afro Samurai.
Visuals: 5/5. The Visuals are stunning, from beautiful scenery such as bamboo gardens and waterfalls, to buckets of blood, this game has it all! Amazing comic book-like coloring and more abound in this game.
Sound: 5/5. This game packs an excellent sound track, humorous dialogue, and excellent sound FX to boot. It keeps you in the game and entertained.
Gameplay: 4.5/5. Once I started playing Afro Samurai, I found it hard to put down. The creativity of moves and different enemies all add to the depth of this outstanding game. The onlys flaw are that, at times, the game can be a little repetitive and the camera can be a little tricky to work with. To get around this, Afro Samurai has an intelligent enemy tracking system and consistently introduces new characters; foe and enemy alike, to keep you entertained.
Price: 5/5. At a measly $20, this game is an outstanding MUST-BUY! The replay value of the game is HUGE as well.
Overall: 5/5. Afro Samurai is a must-own gem for the Playstation 3. Try it out, you will not be disappointed!
this game is sweet its cut em up beet em up do it with style do it fast nd be cool about it. im just pissed that there no more series ressurection was said to be season 2 a cool as movie nd thats it. damn!
Got the game today (well by the time is clocked it will be tomorrow-picked it up today the 28th w/a cool plastic Afro figure).
Skip some of the reviews floating around, some good, some WAY off but with points made and I can agree with.
Hands down, this IS a FUN game. The Samuel L. Jackson's Afro and Ninja Ninja voice overs are well done as well as the others. How can you Not like a game that in the intro says "Motherf---er!!"?!? The RZA soundtrack is kick arse.
The graphics are very well done, sure there are a plethora of other games with some would call better but the true to the catoon series is on par. There is No HUD. A complaint by some reviewers, I found that while sure there could have been an option to have that, it isn't necessary for AS. The blood, the sparkles on your sword and objects and other effects are your hud..pay attention and with Ninja Ninja's help to guide you when needed is cool. Oh and did I mention blood? There is GALLONS of it. Even mentioned in your stat list. Plenty to please the eye.
The fighting is totally fun, and they can get quite crazy at times. Afro can Focus to slow things down to make mean azz moves, jump behind them, behead them, split them down in half and a ton of other executions. You have your horizontal and vertical attacks, kick, jump, block, run/charge along with combos you'll (or as I have so far) found just play mixing it up. Slice and Dice is the name of the game here. Not just button mashing as one review said will work. Well it kinda can but I tend to die much quicker then a more strategic way of fighting. Like fighting 12 people at once, break up the group, slice em some and jump to a new group, bash em around the do it again until you're done or have to take on a boss in the middle of the group. Leave the boss till later, ditch him/her and kill the minions first. There is also some running up walls/jump/climb, grip on and get to a different area. Also have the walk planks that I have seen so far, just take your time, aim right and you can run them. MUCH easier then say, Prince of Persia (I like that game too, but when you get stuck and try 20 times to do something it gets old)..in Afro, so far I have got this down.
Sound is excellent!!! As is the soundtrack.
Gameplay is really fun, especially if you like to fight, using block/rolling/jumping and then thee ol' slice and dice. While it is not like a SF type game, it certainly is no plain button masher either. As mentioned, some reviewer said it can be played that way. Well I like ninja/samurai games alot, so slowing down the fighting and using Afro's mad skillz is more fun (to me).
Cons: no multiplayer. Not really an issue with me. But could be cool. Camera has issues and that seems to be one of the main complaints. I sent off an email before buying the game earlier because of the reviews, asking for them to read them, and perhaps toss out a patch, to revamp the camera control.
Other then that, I give this game a 4.5/or 5 stars (amazon style). I've been playing it for 3-4 hours (with breaks, then been playing more since I wrote this) and do not regreat buying this game. While I'm semi new to the TV series, I think I'll pick up the BR set as it's sat in my cart/wish for a while now.
If you like the series, you'll most likely like the game. If you are new or have no idea what Afro Samurai is, it's still a great game. And as stated I think a quick patch could fix the camera issues-which are NOT that bad.
Lopping off heads, slicing baddies in half, killing poor little teddy bears, scaring off crows, the MOFO banter etc etc etc hasn't been so fun in a while. So go grasshopper, give it a shot or slice rather... Great game.
I generally hate franchise games. Not because they fall short of classic status, but because they fall short of decent. Any superman game comes into mind. These atrocious games have made me largely ignore franchise games. But every once in a while, I'll see something on sale, or getting decent reviews and cave in and get one. Though usually the case, Afro Samurai was a surprisingly great game. The action, while repetitive has surprising depth. Timing your slow motion attack is tricky but once you get the hang of it, a lot of fun. If you really work at it and learn the moves, you'll feel like a supreme bad@$$, being able to take down dozens of bad guys with relative ease. It makes me feel like Afro, and therefore is a success.
There are flaws. They change the story in parts from the show, and the frame rate drops sometimes. Also, the boss fights range from awesome to frustrating, with very few in between. But like I said, a franchise game doesn't need to be halo to be fun, it just has to emulate the experience of the franchise. In that, Afro Samurai is a really good game. It's got the style, the game play, and is most importantly, a lot of fun. Recommended.
sweet story line, good fights, perfect soundtrack. the only downside of it, is that it finished early!
What an odd game this is, first the cons:
It is a button masher no doubt about it
Regular enemies get repetitive fast and they are little more than zombies
There's lags everywhere
Camera is just a paint in the rear
Platforming is just another pain
There is no HUD
Little replay value
You have no real incentive to learn combos o exp up
Bosses can be really cheap
There is no clear way to know where you have a check point
As far as I have seen you have infinite lives
Image clipping everywhere specially with hair
And still I feel this is such a great game I have been enjoying so much and I'll tell you why:
Awesome aesthetics and graphics, cool music, awesome animations, specially when you slice and opponent, $15, topless yakuza tattooed chics trying to kill you and voices by bad@$$ Samuel L. Jackson.
I have never enjoyed so much such a deeply flawed game. This is the ultimate case of style over substance, but I still love it.
the game was alot of fun . some repetitive movement with the bosses that gets tired but worth it.
i think this game sounded truly good on paper but it seems to be missing that little bit of umpf that the show had. this game truly is fun and exciting to say the least, the art style works perfect. the gameplay is really fun and at any time you can dismember enemies.however the story does not follow the show 100% and it seems to cop out at times.however the boss fight with afros doppleganger in the sky is truly mesmerizing. if you liked the show and like action/platformer games then this is your type of game.
Story Line - movie like, "I will avenge my father's death" while trying
earn the little piece of a white cloth to wrap around my Afro
Soundtrack - PLUS
VOICE OVER - PLUS, but also can get annoying Samuel Jackson's funny but
not all the time.
Graphics - I rather Watch the Anime
Camera Angle - OMG this what I hate about this game. it jus sucks
