Don't let the whiny teenage crybabies who organized the boycott and astroturfing influence you.
-Sure, it's overpriced.
-Yes, Infinity Ward ruined the long term mod and custom map communities.
-Perhaps they made it a port of the console game.
-Damn all the aimbots and wallhackers! I see them as a challenge! The developer will take care of this in time.
But, all in all, for $59 I already have gotten 8 hours out of the first go through of single player. I haven't played spec ops yet. Ive already racked up 40 hours having a blast in multiplayer despite the well-documented wallhackers and aimbots.
I suspect over the next year or two I will get a good several hundred hours of total play out of it including single player, spec ops (which you can do with a friend), and multiplayer.
Now let's amortize that $59.00 dollars over the 300+ hours I will enjoy this game: 59/300 = 19.6 cents per hour.
Let's compare this to a movie ticket to a first run movie or a college or pro sporting event including the typical expenses for food and beverage that go along with those events. Hold it! We don't have to. It's going to be anywhere from $20 for a movie to $100 at least for the sporting event and both of these last 2-3 hours. You do the math. ;)
THE GOOD:
-Excellent graphics
-Excellent sound
-Multiplayer is a blast
-Game types are too numerous to list. Suffice it to say there's something for everyone.
-Lots of goodies like weapon types, perks, and rewards for streaks.
-Hair-raising thrills in single player; the snowmobile jump rocked!
-The Killcam is cool: see the guy wallhacking and shooting you when he cant even see you yet!
THE BAD:
-Ripped out any way for the user to customize using the console. This sucks
-Ripped out dedicated servers in favor of listen servers that are setup by the IWnet service. This sucks.
-Cant record or report cheaters. This sucks
-Must turn off the VOIP so as to not hear the retarded teenager whining.
Conclusion:
Can't beat it for cheap entertainment for years to come!
This game isn't horrible by any means. The single player is fun, but short and the graphics are good. If it were $30 i'd have given it 3 or 4 stars. But its $60, $10 more than the standard PC game price. For that price I almost expect a collectors edition or similar. And what do we get for this extra money? NOTHING. We get a poor console port that fails to take advantage of the potential of the PC platform. No dedicated server, and less people allowed on each map.
Just to put into perspective how big a rip off this is: I recently purchased a game that took me 80 hours to complete, had multiplayer, AND a toolset all of which this lacks. It cost me $50.
With MW2 you get the maybe 6 hour long single player, no deditcated server and only 16 players per map and it costs MORE than any other PC game.
I urge everyone to wait until the price drops to buy this. Don't let them increase the cost of gaming. Show them they won't make more money doing so. It's expensive enough buying the PC needed to play modern games.
I'm a PC gamer and I play a lot of PC games. In my opinion a lot of PC gamers are weird and different then console gamers. I guess the best word I can use is indie. They all like Mods and dedicated servers and complain that they can't console command in this game. Maybe it's just me but I hate playing mods on PC games. I just find it stupid. I play the game how the company wants me to play it. If they wanted to add mods they would, and I do think it's dumb that people make mods. I never understood it. I think mods and dedicated server games are so boring because everytime I join a dedicated type game I always play some stupid custom game and no one ever plays like straight matchmaking and that's what I like. Anyway, this game is great. I love the matchmaking and the customizing everything. Only thing I wish IW did was make a Collector's Edition. I really want to know why they didn't.
BACKGROUND: I started pc gaming with the original half-life and CS. I've owned/played all the pc Medal of Honor games up to Pacific Assault(which i thought was fail) and I've bought all the COD titles except COD3. My comp. specs are: Windows Vista 64bit, Intel Core i7 920 overclocked to 3.2ghz, dual Evga GTX 260 core 216 896mb, 12gigs of ram(yes i know overkill, but what the hell)
Okay yes like a lot of PC Gamers I was annoyed when they released special editions for the consoles.. and nothing for PC and then the price increase to 60$ was upsetting as well. Finally when they announced that there would be no dedicated servers... I was worried and pissed that IW had gone out and ruined the game I had been waiting for what seemed like forever. I actually had 3 copies of the game pre-ordered for a couple friends of mine and myself, which I soon canceled after hearing about no dedicated servers.
Soo then the 9th came, the day before the retail version was going to be released, and I was sitting at work reading posts on IW forums and decided what the hell I'll pre-order one copy and give it a shot. The game came to my door step about 1p.m. the next day. Install took about 15-20 min and so I started up single player and man what an intense ride it was. I ended up finishing the single player about 6 p.m.
Now it was time to try the multiplayer, which I thought for sure would be a very disappointing experience. To my surprise though I ended up having a blast.. didn't notice any lag, except for a few brief incidents in a couple games. I was in a couple games where the host dropped and it had to go through the merge process, which was a surprisingly smooth process. I actually enjoyed the the less amount of players... a lot of the servers in COD4 just had way to many people and games just turned into a nade fest. I ended up playing about 4 hours, before forcing myself to quit, so I could get some sleep before work.
Anyway, I highly recommend people give this game a try... I'm glad I did. I think I had more fun playing MW2 last night than I ever did playing COD4, which is saying a lot because COD4 was great.

can u believe activision with this garbage. listen! let me break it down a bit. u must install steam so that u can install the game. $60, hard earn dollars for some rubbish that i don't want on my computer. activision didn't ensure that while marketing the product u would know that this is how it would be or else i would not have bought it. u must have internet to install steam, so never mind if you don't have the internet and want toplay the game that u really paid for.
i shredded modern warfare 1 after i had finish playing the s.p and found out how the multiplayer allowed the heli to target the better players. that's not how you make a good/great game. world at war was better imo and many many people loved it. why didn't u just continue on that path and allow gamers to relish in your work. no u must follow the blind (other game creators) and as with some of them, will fall in the foolish ditch. how idiotic can u really get?
now i got his game thinking that activision would improve upon what was bad with the last m.w.1 game and all they did was make the thing worst. activision is behaving like e.a, thq and others with these garbage softwares that you must install to play the actual that u spend your money to buy.
as i am typing this review i am installing the game after the long process of installing and creating a steam account. it's after that that i can install the game which takes 16 minutes. and believe me my computer is nothing to laugh at: i have a p5q3 m.b, q9550 cpu overclocked to 3.9 ghz on liquid cooling completely stable with ddr3 memory runny at a little over 1800 mhz, a gtx oc 275 o.c amongst the other high end products my system has, so believe when i say my system isn't slow or near slow by any means. man i am so mad at at activision right now. $60 dollars for this garbage.
you (activision) will want most of these 300+ reviewers to buy your games in the future. i hope that like me, since they are equally upset, if not more, will not buy another game from you until you leave people to have the right to use their purchase as they see fit.
this is my first 2009 game purchase for i made up my mind not to buy any games from thq or e.a amongst the others that's putting all kinds of game restrictions on peoples purchase. i thought u at activision would use wisdom and see how many persons have walked away from purchasing e.a and others games because of what they are doing to their games. And u go ahead and follow those clowns. i will not buy any more of your games if this is how you intend to operate.
i hope the market rejects what the gameing industry is doing and then when you can't make a profit and is going bankrupt then you will go back to your roots and make games the way people want and not what you want to impose on them.
Every PC gamer knows that this game is great. They know that the feature changes make sense. And what they feel is wrong about this game may actually save the PC gaming industry, but I fear it is too late for that. The recent controversy over the direction taken by Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare 2 on PC is the real beginning of the end for PC gaming. If developers didn't know it by now, it is apparent with the release of MW2 that PC games just aren't profitable anymore. Nor are they worth the negative press generated by entitled PC gamers. Infinity Ward doesn't owe you anything just because you bought their last few games. Get over yourselves and go play a great game that Infinity Ward labored to make one of the best gaming experiences possible. It is probably one of PC's last.
Modern Warfare 2 is awesome. It's a bit short for solo play (7-10 hours) but lots of fun for the Special Ops and Multiplayer. The games are fast paced and will challenge most players. There is an endless variety of weapons (after unlocking) and tactics to use. Beware...all of this is addicting trying all the various tactics and weapons. It can become a big time sink, but worth every minute.
I have never tried Multiplayer before and it was very easy to get access. I did need to have my firewall ZoneAlarm set to "game mode" to basically provide "yes" answers to most dialog boxes which might not be seen after the game starts.
I have only played the "Free for All" where you play against the other players. You get extra "perks" which consists of special weapons and abilities for the points you accrue during the game. Also, you are supposed to be able to play from anywhere even without the disk in the computer. I mostly play and don't have to insert the original disk which is very convenient. I haven't tried to play from another computer yet.
Supposedly, in Multiplayer, you play only against folks in about the same experience level but I seem to get more advanced players who are much better. Maybe all these young kids are just better. I keep trying and it's still lots of fun even for us old timers.
The graphics and sounds are astounding and very movie-like. How they do this over the Internet (Multiplayer) is amazing. I do have a reasonably fast computer (Intel dual core 2Ghz with 3 gigs of memory) and don't see any slow downs in play.
I highly recommend this game. It tells me I've spent 48 hours playing and I guess I'm addicted. It's the best I've played to date.
Some game developers sure know how to bite the hands that feed them (or the PC gaming community that made them a larger industry than Hollywood). Activision, creator of some of my favorite games of all time (anyone else miss Mechwarrior 2?), has proved that even they are not to be trusted. Releasing an inferior product at an above average price is just not OK. Lack of dedicated servers is the worst offender here, as is the lack of support for anything more than 9 vs. 9 in online play. Charging 20% more for than average for a PC game that is a port of a console game is lame, shameful, and completely disrespectful to the PC gamers who have made the gaming industry what it is today.
It's not often that I advocate a boycott of a product, but in this case I think it's warranted.
Shame on you Activision. Shame on you Infinity Ward.
I'd give this a negative star if it was possible.
I would like to echo the outrage that the PC community is feeling. These guys have ruined this game by taking away the dedicated servers and providing a short single player experience. Now PC users are limited to 9 vs 9 games hosted on one of the users PCs giving them an advantage. The game is just like the console version. Everything from the interface, you don't even get to see pings, just a cell phone like signal graph to the price being $60. They are probably going to charge for all the add on content too. The game has been out for a day and it is being reported that hacks are already available for the cheaters and with no dedicated server admins to bring down the ban hammer what will be done about it? I am thinking if you are looking for a war themed FPS you should wait and see what Battlefield Bad Company 2 shapes up to be like or check out the other alternatives.
This game is fun, no question about it. But having played and memorized every map on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, this game just feels like a DLC for the original. The Single Player is good (there are a few WOW and OMFG moments), but it is short, extremely short, must I add. Some of my friends have claimed that they beat the game in 5-6 hours. I would tell them how bad of a player they really are. I was done with the campaign in under 5 hours (4 hours, 30 minutes to be precise).
The multiplayer is the main attraction of any Call of Duty game. That being said, the Spec Ops missions are extremely fun and challenging (on Veteran). It requires team effort if you want to get through them with 3/3 stars. However, Spec Ops is the ONLY great attraction in this iteration of the franchise.
The competitive mode feels like a DLC with added weapons and some new maps. The basic formula hasn't changed. The graphics feel outdated. It looked great two years ago, why the hell would IW think it would look good on this day of the year? Infinity Ward should have took the money Activision granted them to build a completely new engine from ground up. Host migration, during the middle of the game, is lame and it kills the fun. Lack of dedicated server - well, thats a big no in the PC community. 18 players max - GOD NO. No mod support - MAKE IT STOP.
Fun Factor: 4/5
Rating: 3/5
I have been playing Modern Warfare 2 since a couple of days after the release because I got it from Steam. I have been playing with my buddies from the clan and several other friends since pretty much everybody got the game by now. It is a fun game; however, I am still annoyed with several issues that need to be addressed with the game and IW.net.
First, this matchmaking does not seem to be working for the player to make the experience simpler. The purpose of getting rid of dedicated servers was supposed to make it easier and more approachable to the casual player restricting the interface to a console-like experience. However, it has been completely the opposite effect. Since we are lacking dedicated servers, a player is going to be designated to host. If you are behind a router, as most people are, make sure you forward all the ports that are needed otherwise your NAT is going to be set to "Strict". If you are a casual gamer, I probably lost you already but you can see my point.
Second, the party system does not seem to work without problems. It is tedious, you have to invite everybody and for some reason some of your friends will not be able to connect to your party. It always takes a couple of tries until somebody can successfully be party leader and invite without issues.
Third, on several occasions, the player that is hosting will disconnect because he either rage quits or his connection is not good enough. At this point, it is possible someone in your party will disconnect while trying to switch to another host. Not to mention the process takes about 20 to 30 seconds in a good scenario which disrupts the flow of the game and annoys all players.
Fourth, this system was supposed to improve the cheating situation, but it has not. The first Modern Warfare had plenty of cheaters but if you usually played in a good server they were banned. As of today, I have not heard of Steam taking any action against cheaters. I have encountered my fair share of people with aim bots and wall hacks. If this situation is to continue people with just go to other games, no matter how good this game is.
In conclusion, Modern Warfare 2 is a fun game, I've had great times playing with my buddies. However, it is worth noting that IW.net needs work. It is of the utmost importance to ban and do away with cheaters. Fix all the bugs plaguing the matchmaking system or at least provide proper documentation to deal with networking issues.
Despite what others have said about the PC version of MW2, I think it is THE best online FPS games that I have ever played. First off, the PC version lets you customize the graphic options which is really nice if you have a good computer, but it's okay if you don't have the best PC on the market. I play on a laptop with average specs(core 2 duo T6600, 4Gigs, Nvidia GT130)and I get mind blowing graphics on medium setting. The online experience is not bad at all. I don't understand why so many users rate it so harshly. I find no flaws in my online game play with the exceptional lag, but usually the lag is fixed almost immediately by host migration so nothing to worry about there. I think the online chatting feature is also underrated. It is a great feature to have and makes gaming very enjoyable. The campaign is awesome and the multi-player is even better. I don't regret a single penny spent on this game ($60 is quite a lot but through my experience, it is worth every penny). I would definitely recommend this game to any gamer.
Multiplayer THE REASON I GOT THIS GAME! is very poor do not waste your money. this is not for hardcore cod Multiplayers on pc at all! sorry guys i,ll see you on downpoor, pipeline, because this is a waste of time and a insult to the last game and all of us Multiplayer fans!
This is for the pc
I have to admit: as much as I really enjoyed MW 2, there really isnt any other game in history that hasnt been as overhyped as this one. Yes its fun. Yes its more action packed than the first. No, im not going to give it a low score just because there are no dedicated servers. While I actually enjoyed multiplayer, I didnt buy the game exclusively for that, and Im sure most gamers will say the same. The major gripe I have about this game is that IW still hasnt changed the basic gameplay formula since the first call of duty, and I have to say its getting pretty stale. They just covered it up with in your face action and awesome set pieces and more awesome weapons. MW 2 is a great game. Is it game of the year? No. Is it the greatest game ever? Hell no. Lets say its fun and leave it at that.
This game is pretty good. Although if you have a console I would recommend buying it for there because Steam servers go down for updating more often. Also, occasional hackers sometimes ruin the game but graphics are great and is very fun to play. I had a great buying experience of this game through Amazon.
