I go to school most of the year and don't bring my systems with me, so I have very little time to devote to games. I was excited enough about Bayonetta to make it my only purchase for the next six months because I enjoyed Devil May Cry, though I thought it had a lot of problems that needed to be fixed. They were, and how. It was definitely the right choice.
Bayonetta is very much a fully formed game; there are no constant, nagging problems that could have been easily fixed like there are in most first games in a series. Hideki Kamiya made the first Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta definitely uses that game as a stepping stone to start doing brand new things with the genre. Unlike DMC or Ninja Gaiden (which I also enjoyed a lot), the difficulty curve in Bayonetta is very smooth without ever letting you feel comfortable. It's difficult the whole way through (whereas Ninja Gaiden, say, spikes at the Alma fight and never picks back up.) It's also never hair-pullingly tough (and if you want it to be, start a new game in hard mode)
But most importantly, it's fun. The combat system is very fluid, giving you a lot of choices in your moves and making sure they're all entertaining to watch. While the overt sexualization of Bayonetta is unfortunate (I'll just never be 14 years old again), the actual actions you undertake are ridiculous and tongue-in-cheek enough that it's mostly not that offensive until the very end. The rest of the game is a campy joyride, with some of the most over-the-top boss battles I've ever seen. If you ever played Contra 3 and gaped in awe as your characters jumped from one missile to another shooting an enormous alien, you'll have an idea of the scale things get to here. Bayonetta is the son of Contra, and I can't think of many better compliments to give.
