IL - 2 Sturmovik - Birds of Prey (Playstation 3)
IL - 2 Sturmovik - Birds of Prey (Playstation 3) Reviews
this is a great game, as everyone else has said. excellent graphics and detail and historical accuracy.
only thing is, it isnt worth getting for the ps3 unless you like controlling your planes with a gamepad and some buttons. the game just begs to be played as realistically as it is build. having played it on ps3 as well as the 360 w/ the Ace-Edge (the Ace Combat 6 joystick/throttle), i have to say, opt for the latter. gamepads are just not how this game was meant to be played. i know most people own both consoles, so opt for the 360 with ace-edge, i guarantee you will not be disappointed!
Overall, this is a great combat simulator that gives the player the opportunity of battling in some of the World War II most memorable settings.
GRAPHICS: Solid graphics with fine resolution. The scenery changes considerably for each different round/country/weather/time of day, so you will not get bored by the same old thing during hours of flight. Plus, the clouds and smoke (some of the lousiest graphics in older games) border on perfection.
PLAYABILITY: Of course, you have to like flight. If you do, you'll find that this game will provide plenty of entertainment for many weeks. You have an Arcade Mode which is relatively easy but saves you the frustration of coordinating the hard (though realistic) ability required by the Simulator Mode. Also, you have plenty of different types of objectives which make for a varied game throughout different its many rounds/campaigns - from good old dog-fights to maritime bombing missions, with many others in between.
SOUND: I'm not much of a specialist in this type of game detail, but I would say that the sound is as realistic as it gets. So much so that you will soon find yourself turning down the volume so that the rattling machine gun and the drumming piston-engine don't wear you deaf. The music is fine and sends you back to the 40's, though it also gets tiresome after a while (I believe they do for all games, so take this comment with a grain of salt).
CONCLUSION: if you like planes and World War II (no guided missiles or jets flying IL-2 Stumovik's skies!) this game is excellent for its realism and entertainment.
This game far surpasses any existing flying experience previously found on any console system. It IS as close to a perfect gaming experience as I've seen. My wife yelled at me for 3 nights running because I didn't come to bed until almost dawn as I was up playing all night long.
The campaign is robust and as more players get the game the online experience will be a blast. The airfiled capture is great fun.
Flight dynamics are real enough that you'll want a stick to go with it (I bought the Hotas for $37). Even with the sixaxis/dualshock it is a hoot to play. One thing is for sure, you must get this game.
