MLB 2K10 (Playstation 2) Reviews
Another fine entry from 2K Sports. These guys really give EA Sports a run for their money. The gameplay is easy to learn and it is very fun to play. The stadiums have great detail and the players look good. This is a great game for baseball lovers of all ages and it proves that the Playstation 2 still has life in it. The price is great and you get your money's worth. I hope 2K Sports gets back into the NFL market as soon as EA's monopoly expires. In my opinion, 2K Sports games are much better with presentation. A home run for the PS2.
Once again, The makers of the MLB 2K series have reached a new plateau for stupidity. The MLB 2K10 game is probably the worst baseball video game it's ever been my displeasure to own. This game is not designed for enjoyment. It's been designed by developers with over-inflated egos who want to show how clever they are. The most despicable attribute is that you as the player cannot make changes to any player's attributes and/or skills and expect them to be implemented in game play. I can live with that if that was their intention. But why have the skill sliders to increase or decrease their skill levels in the 1st place? Why not just grey out this aspect of the menu? No matter. This will be the last time I purchase anything from the MLB 2K. This deplorable crap was not designed for the average gamer who plays for enjoyment.
Okay, the game was only 20 bucks I know, but still this is a product where the graphics during the game are worse then what I've seen then when baseball games came out on the PS2 in 2000. I know that all the developers and programmers are focusing on the PS3 brand and trying to detail that game, but you can't forget about the millions of people that still haven't upgraded to the PS3 yet, and release just a stick and ball game for us.
Let's get into some game detail:
*The latest roster update is from December 2009, and I don't believe they'll bother with releasing another one for this version.
*The stadiums have each of their basic features with hardly any detail outside of the walls of the park, for example, the sky is either a solid blue all around the stadium, or solid black. There are no other buildings. A specific example is when playing at fenway, you usually see the prudential building in left center in the distance, and a few other buildings, but the stadiums might as well be floating in space with this game. Also the crowd is very lame, as their are all of three differenct hazy characters that are at a standing ovation throughout.
*The commentary is almost well done except it doesn't recognize the play sometimes, and will often say things like "it's drops for a hit" when the ball was caught.
*All the players are built about the same size, regardless, and the face doesn't come close to looking anything like them. If you look at the back cover of the PS2 case, you'll see a PS3 version of Longoria.
*The defensive gameplay is a bit confusing, as sometimes players will watch the ball drop right in front of them even if your positioned within the ball tracking circle.
Final Analysis:
Really the only good thing I have to say for this game is their menus look good, and they give you a lot of games within the game to play with. This game I would probably just recommend if you don't mind having updated rosters for this year, and just like to simulate seasons, and the off season. Even then, I would just try a different game, or go back a few years (6 to be exact to 2004!) to the last baseball games that were done before the PS3 came out, these would be MVP Baseball 2005 and MLB 2005, which were officially the last two that a full development staff worked on creating in 2004, before they began working on ps3 versions for the systems release in 06. I know you'll have old rosters, but you'll definitely have a better quality game then this pile that is MLB2K10 aka the thing that keeps the chair from rocking side to side now.
The really great news is you can buy those two games above for about one dollar on amazon. nice!
